Hellow. I am considering to buy Canon 85mm F1.2L Mark II for wedding shots and also want to be a serious wedding photographer as a part time job.
So I want to listen various opinions from current users for this lens and wedding photographers if I should buy or not. Thanks in advance :eek::eek:

At a recent wedding I attended I hit up the the photographer and he said he uses the 24-70, 24-105 and 85L for 90% of his shots.

Also I want to know how much percentage would be used especially for 85L, 30%, 50% ?

I've been using it for sometime now. I think it a must for wedding photographer who keen on shooting natural indoor light. Especially how dark Some of these churches are. It's not that slow like everyone is complaining about. Here's my copy on my new beloved M3 :)

agreed. It is portrait lens. You don't need the speed for sport style.

I too love mine for weddings. Focus recompose is not an option with this lens when approaching wide open ap's. Mine hunts in real low light...but so do many in real low light.

My keeper rate is lower with this lens compared to my 24-70 or 70-200 but the ones I keep I generally love more than any other shot. I use it mainly on my 5D FF and mostly 1.2 to 2.8 but recently used it on my 30D and while I had to get use to the crop factor I really loved the shots I got.

Overall I use it mostly during the reception and for some detail shots. Maybe 25-40% of my shots come from the 85L but it depends. Each wedding is different.
Most times I'm waiting for a moment to capture...so AF speed is not so vital to me in that environment.
Bottom line. I Never regretted the choice to buy it.

If I could have only one lens, it'd probably be this one.

If you are an experienced pohotographer capable of shooting a wedding you should not even need to ask this question!

Read the many reviews.

What is an "experienced pohotographer"? Do I need to return my 85L if I don't meet your criteria?

Damn...maybe I shouldn't be asking these questions. Am I experienced enough to want to engage in discussion with other pohotographers?

...Curses...I just don't know. I'll search online.

The 135L is also another one to consider. Especially for portraits, this gives a little more telephoto compression and is amazing straight from wide open through f8. Working distance is a little longer as well. I honestly don't find myself taking portraits below f/2 generally, so the 135L would be my choice before the 85. However...the 85L is a lot of fun at 1.2 !

I use it heavily at every wedding I shoot (photography is my only occupation). Highly recommended, as would the 50 f/1.2L on your 1D.

I'm in the same boat as the OP and am trying to choose between the 35L & the 85L. I'm leaning towards the 85 for the increased compression and the assumption thats its sharper @ f/1.4 than the 35L is wide open. I've gone over loads of past wedding shots and I tend to take equal numbers of shots at both the 35 & 85mm focal lengths. Decisions, decisions :)
