I'm considering buying a TC, maybe a 1.4X or 2X, or even both

but wich brand should I look forward to?

In a near future (next summer) I want to get a Sigma 70-200 and probably use then on it on far to reach subjects or use then in conjonction with extention tubes to make some macro with my 50mm...

so, Canon, Kenko, Sigma or Tamron?

Thanks in advance for any tips

P.S. I know about the lost of auto focus at some point and all, it's just a question of brand and quality

Daniel

thats exactly why I was asking, I have seen many talking about Kenko TC, I have no doubt about Canon ones, the difference in prices between Kenko's and Canon's is not that big, just wondering if there were better ones in the lot
I had put the Sigma and Tamron in the batch to see if anyone had used them

thanks again for any comments

If you plan to use the TC with Canon telephoto lenses then get the Canon TCs. If you want to use the TC with other stuff then skip the Canon TCs because they are incompatible with a lot of lenses.

I use a Canon 5DIII and a Sony A7rIII

it would be used most likely with Sigma lenses, 70-200mm f2.8 and maybe later with the soon to come out Sigma 150-500mm OS

Either or...

I use a Canon 1.4x TC on my 70-200mm f/4L IS and 300mm f/4L IS lenses but, would have no problem using a Kenko.

Kenkos can be used on some lenses (even some Canon lenses) for which the 1.4x Canon in unsuitable due to a element in the TC.

The Non-canon brand TC's can be used on some lenses that would require taping the contacts on the Canon TC because the lens is reduced to less than f/5.6 which is the minimum autofocus aperture on 1.6x cameras. The non-Canon TC's don't communicate the relative aperture to the camera. However, even though the non-Canon TC fools the camera, the AF is degraded considerably with lenses that have an aperture of less than f/5.6 without a TC.

I would not ever use a 2x TC (no matter the brand) because IMO the image quality is just not there and it does drastically interfere with the auto focus capability. Just how much depends on the camera and lens combination.

I have used a borrowed Kenko 2x TC on my 30D with 70-200mm f/4L IS lens and it reduced that superlative lens to a mediocre performer both in IQ and AF.

I have both Canon 1.4 and Kenko Pro 1.4 and IMO there is nothing to choose between the two in terms of the IQ . My Kenko Pro cost me around a quarter of the price of the Canon, so a substantial savings. As already stated the Kenko will also fit just about any lens whereas the Canon is limited to certain lenses due to the protrusion. By the way, the Kenko Pro reports the aperture to the Camera the same as the Canon.

I've owned the cheap Tamron, the Kenko Pro and the Sigma EX 1.4x TCs. The Tamron was not quite as good, but many say that it affects the AF speed the least.

I took extensive real-world comparison shots between the Kenko Pro and the Sigma, using a Canon 70-200 f/4 L IS, Canon 300 f/4 L (non-IS) and the Sigma 100-300 f/4 EX. For each picture, I took the same shot twice, then swapped TCs and took 2 more with the same settings.

After all this I concluded that the only real difference between the 2 TCs was a small variation in colour of the images (as usual the Sigma gave a very slightly warmer image), and even that was only obvious when comparing side by side. I could genuinely not tell the difference between the 2 in any of the shots I took, except for the marginal colour difference.

Another thing I noticed was that there was no 'affinity' for the Sigma TC using the Sigma lens. The results on that lens were the same as for either of the Canon lenses.

I didn't notice any difference in AF performance, but none of my tests were difficult to focus on, so I can't reach any conclusions. I tried a similar test with the Kenko Pro and Sigma EX 2x TCs, however, and my lenses focussed much better with the Kenko. I didn't do any image quality comparisons, as the focussing performance meant that I didn't want the Sigma. I've heard (elsewhere) that the Canon TCs affect the AF performance more than the Kenkos, but I can't corroborate that.
And I'm sorry but no, I don't think I still have the test shots :)

I've never tried the Canon I'm afraid - given the info I've seen, it didn't seem worth spending the extra.

First I suggest you read the Forum's TC FAQ https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=41922.

If you take the time to do that you'll see a note that Canon EF Mark II teleconvertors don't fit the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX lens... The older Canon Mark I TCs did.

Second, I suggest you stop listening to these idiots on the forum who are chanting "Canon, Canon, Canon" and recommending that you buy a TC that won't work with the lens you are intending to buy...

The Kenko Pros and the Sigma's both review well.

:claps:

if youre going sigma lenses then get a sigma t/c. ive got the 1.4x and have run it on the 70-200 in the past with no issues. tbh ive rarely used it since but found no AF or colour issues (was plenty of light when shooting).
