There's a spec of something (dust maybe) inside my 50 f/1.8

As someone else on this message board said, "If it wasn't for bad luck, I wouldn't have any luck at all."

Yeesh...after 5 DRebels gone bad, now my 50 f/1.8 has a speck of dust or something trapped inside the lens on one of the optical pieces elements in there. It's definitely inside and not outside. What options do I have? Man, I don't want to have to deal with sending this back to B&H. Should I take it to a local store (like Wolf) to have it sent to Canon for a warranty repair/replacement?

I guess the good news is that it looks like my 28-105 made it through just fine.

Edit: I didn't actually notice it until I took both caps off my 50 f/1.8 and looked through it into a light source. But, when I do that, it's quite obvious.

I say if it doesn't affect the images, then don't worry about it. Then again, if it was mine, it would probably bother the heck out of me knowing it was there.

For that reason, and that reason alone, I refuse to go check my lens to see if it has dust in it!

You will probably never notice the speck in your shots. My 50mm f/1.8 also has one or two specks of dust, but I never see them in the final image. The dust is so out of focus, that it just doesn't show up. Take some shots and find out what the impact is.

Sounds good. I'll take some shots. I'm not going to critique them tonight. But, I'll give it a shot tomorrow.

I tried a couple of quick shots, and I don't see anything. I'm going to assume that that speck of whatever isn't going to affect the final image...at least not enough to notice.

I would not worry about it. But if you want to test, try it at the smallest and largest apature at a white wall.

What happend to all of your Drebels?

If it aint broke, dont fix it. One of my 50 1.8's has a spec of dust in it and no problems.

My 50mm is used and is at least 10 years old. It has a dozen or two particles.

Doesn't affect it the performance.

Yeah, whatever is in my 50 f/1.8 looks to be larger than a "spec." I'ts not huge, but it looks to be like a couple of specs wide. Anyway, hard to explain. Again, I didn't notice any kind of degredation in picture quality at 1/60. So, I think I'm gonna be ok.

When I got my 70-200 I saw a speck inside. I've never seen it in a photo though, so I don't worry about it any more.

It's actually not dust, I carefully examined my 50 mk II and somewhere I read that upon a few initial uses of this lense, sometimes the gears for the focus mechanism shred the metal. It doesn't affect operation or image, but the specs can get lodged in between the lenses.
