I have a Rebel XTi 400D. I can't get the aperture setting lower than 5.6. I have a 18-55mm lens attached. What am I doing wrong here? I have it on manual mode so I can adjust it.

Could it be the light? I'm in my livingroom and it's 10pm at night, we have the lights on so there's no bright natural sun light right now.

I know I can get it lower than 5.6 and for that matter I can't get higher than 1/200.

Can you tell I'm the biggest 'newbie' on the planet.

That particular lens has a variable aperture. Try zooming the lens so that everything is as small as possible in the viewfinder. Now try to adjust the aperture to a smaller number (larger opening).

Yeah the kit lens has a variable aperture, so at 18mm it will be at 3.5 minimum and 55mm 5.6mm. Also with the flash popped up, it will cap the shutter speed at 1/200 max.
