I thought perhaps some of you might want to see what the MkIII does at ISO 6400 without any noise reduction or any other PS enhancements for that matter. All images were shot @ ISO 6400 and f/2.8, then I cropped and resized them for posting but I didn't boost exposure or sharpen any of them. EXIF is embedded and I've posted shutter speed. This ballpark is a dungeon at home plate on dark nights under the lights. I'm almost certain that if I spent just a bit of time post processing these images they'd be good enough for trading cards and they're probably good enough for editorial use as is. You can be the judge of the MkIII's low light capabilities -- I think it does the job quite well myself. We'll see how AI Servo AF performs when hot weather arrives in a few more weeks.

Jerry ~ Baseball is a game where only defensive players handle the ball and offensive players who hit successfully in only one third of their at bats are among the best in the sport.

the noise control from this camera wows me every time, it looks like my 40d at iso 1600 with a little bit of noise reduction.

good shots but the lack of a ball kind of takes away from the photos granted at the shutter speeds itd be nothing but a huge blur, also you cropped out the ends of the bat in a few of the photos. great job of capturing the eyes...something i deffinately gotta work on

Unlike most other sports, lack of a ball in the frame doesn't detract from baseball batter shots -- to the contrary, most baseball batter shots are less interesting when the ball is in the frame. Capturing faces and especially eyes are the keys to interesting baseball batter shots. If you want proof, examine some baseball trading cards that contain photos of batters -- other than bunts, you'll see very few with balls in the frame. Cropped bat tips seldom detract from baseball batter shots either -- again, examine baseball trading cards where you'll see some radical crops.

Disregarding the technical aspects of the sport.
The picture quality at ISO 6400 is very good.
Thanks for posting.......:)

I was going to say the same thing. This looks better than my shots at ISO 1600 on my XTi... Just amazing.

The image quality is great....but I have the agree, none of these shots do anything for me. I could not sell these images, but then again, I don't do trading cards.

Believe it or not, these are all keepers and most are ones photo editors might use. However, if it was a post to show off some of my stuff I probably wouldn't post any of them here because only a couple of them, perhaps 1 and 8, are average or better captures. I definitely wouldn't post #2 because anyone remotely familiar with the game knows that's a swing and a miss; however, it's the best face shot I got of that guy during the game. I posted these images to show folks that the MkIII is better than most cameras we've seen in low light situations -- that's why all are @ IOS 6400 and f/2.8 thus pegged.

Dave, I doubt that I'll ever take the time to do that -- I think you can see the potential they have though with a bit of post processing.

I've been using ROF w/ AI Servo for the last few months and I have practically no OOF shoots. YMMV :)

apologies in advance for the hijack but are you saying that the ROF is better than ctr pt? To use the ROF, do you do anything different technically or simply keep your subject inside the ring? along those lines, do you change anything with CFs to expand the AF? Inquiring minds really do want to know.. feel free to pm me if you want to avoid a hijack.

Looks like you're enjoying that mkIII a little more than you thought you would ;)

To all those saying that the lack of ball detracts, you're off by a bit. Getting a decent amount of face on a bat-on-ball shot is very difficult because most hitters keep their heads down. While it is cool to see and impresses your friends, reaction shots where you see a players face sell significantly better.

I'll just post one example so I don't hijack Jerry's thread, but the Ratliff (Stanford) shot will sell a lot better than the Kline (Neb) shot.
