I would like to know has anyone purchased the 580ex flash yet & if so how do you like it? Also was this your first flash or did you upgrade from the 550EX?
Hopefully this is not a repeat question if so can someone post the link to where this was discussed before.

I'm not impressed with it....I have 550EX's and this doesn't seem to be a great improvement and this is an expensive unit. My vivitar 283 is more consistent and its a $70 flash.

I just got my 580EX Flash yesterday. So far I can say it looks a lot like a Nikon Flash. I really like the placement of the buttons and the new control wheel love it. So far it seems to spool up quicker and more efficiently than the 550EX dose. For any one who's been using the 550's for a time now you can see a very noticeable improvement in recycle times of this flash. I will put a real world test on the flash this weekend at my events if I really like it I will be selling off my other 550EX. We will see.

Just got it yesterday and will use it at a wedding tomorrow. I was using the Sigma 500 and while it did a good job, I think the 580ex will do even better. I heard a lot about it being plasticky and flimsy but it does not appear to be any less sturdy than other flash units. It has a nice stylish look to it, being smaller than the 550ex, but I can't yet speak for performance until after this weekend. I will also be using rechargeable batteries (2450mAh) with this flash. In the future I will probably get some type of Quantum battery or similar unit.

Thanks, for the replys I'll try to check one out from school & do my own test. It seems in general 50/50, I do feel that the 420ex works better on the 10d in auto than the 550 but thats another story.
