#17 Texas is the only state whos flag can fly at the same mast as the US flag.

Actually, all states "may", by national flag code, fly their flags on seperate poles at equal height. I think Texas may be the only state who's flag code states that the state flag "should" fly at equal height, if on a seperate pole. Wikipedia also points out that there are claims that "At some Texas Army National Guard armories, only the Texas flag flies on the flagpole during the day".

Very good reminder, though, Mike! ;)

When Texas became a state they retained the right to split into 5 separate states if I remember my history correctly. Does this option still exist?

And what's our exit strategy for Berkeley? They tried to ban the Marine recruiting station. They don't want us there. I think we need to pull out before the insurgency begins.

Wow, good memory! You were around in the mid-1800s? ;)

Yes, in 1845 there was a provision in the annexation docs for splitting Texas up, but in the Compromise of 1850, Texas lost a lot of little pieces of land to various bordering states, lowering the probability that it might ever occurr today. The primary reason for the provision was to easily maintain a balance of free-states to slave-states prior to 1865, should any other single state be admitted. The provision really has little point today. The only way I see them carving Texas up, is if a "The Day After Tomorrow" scenario occurrs and Texas' population density sky-rockets to the point that there is a need for a disbursement of power. In other words, it isn't happening...but it IS there. ;)

You'd have widespread lunacy and civil unrest without an occupying force there! ;)

#18 ... Texas is so big that people constantly use the phrase "the size of Texas" as a rough unit of measure for things like large meteors, small planets, extraterrestrial impact craters and pre-modern land masses. :D

It also means that if you get bored living at one place in Texas and move to get away from it, you'll probably still be in Texas!

I agree. But tell that to all the damned Hippies living there.

My point exactly about the Hippies, and the Peoples Republic.

Yeah, Berkeley is somewhat of an embarrassment for us Bay Area folks. It is sooo different than most of the Bay Area, well to us, at least. Texans may not see the difference in liberalism...

They sure do things big in Texas. I was at the Houston Stock Show & Rodeo, and we went over to a little place called the "Hideaway Bar". It was the ENTIRE floor of the Astrodome!

Visit Austin, TX. You'll think differently after that visit.

I have been to Austin for a few business trips. I've seen the bats under the Congress Street Bridge, I ran into the guy that stands out at Town Lake playing his guitar all day, and yes, who can visit Austin without seeing Sixth Street on the weekend?

Trust me, there is NO place like Berzerkeley

Reason #21

Because there are 3 major power grids in the US and Texas completely owns one of them The grids are the Eastern Interconnection, the Western Interconnection, and the Texas Interconnection.

So while all of our friends on the east and west coast are going without electricity in the summer because they grid is oversaturated, we are running just fine down here.

Reason #22

Because we got ranches bigger than some states. The King Ranch is actually bigger than the state of Rhode Island.
