I was just noodling the idea of getting paid to take pictures or just selling a photo. Mind you, I'm not making the kind of photos that any one with common sense would pay for. So now I'm wondering how people actually make that first sale. Did someone come by and say "hey you, can you take some pictures for me" or did someone like a photo you posted somewhere? Just wondering how others got that first sale.

My first sale came about when I approached a HS booster club about taking action shots at the games. However my first sale was actually form a different school in a different town that called me to cover their football team. Someone at the first school liked my shots and gave them my name. Sales to parents at the first school have been poor (probably because it's a new school, first HS for the town, Only has 2 grades so far and no Varsity sports) But all of my other work has come about because of them. It is also the only school that I give a kickback to. I live in the town and want to help the school.

During a break in play, I snapped someone walking a Huskey. Showed her the pic on the LCD and she asked how much for a poster of it? All downhill from there...

I saw a flyer posted on a bulletin board at my school stating "photographer wanted to cover social event", with a phone number. I called, got all the details arranged, covered the event, got free food, and made some $$$ doing what I love
