New user and straight into a question :o

Hopefully someone can save my sanity and point me in the direction of a source of replacement lens caps for the Powershot S5 IS. Mine got lost in the Easter storms and I've had no luck getting a replacement. Any pointers greatly appreciated

you could always try to get an adaptor put on the end...to at least cover the lens

or call canon and see if they've got replacement caps that they sell 1-800-828-4040

Thank you. I'll try Canon on Monday.

I measured the lens the unit and it came to 58mm. I then ordered the "Canon E-58U Lens Cap For EF Lenses With USM" from Amazon. Although the right size, it would not click into place. I made a similar mistake with another guess. So I definitely need to be pointed in the right direction!

I've just found another supplier who has the above 58mm cap but also lists "Canon 58mm Snap-On Front Lens Cap". I wonder if that might be the one?

nah...i don't think so...post the link though and i'd be able to tell for sure...the problem with the 58mm lens caps is most of them are for external lenses used on an SLR...the link for the ebay auction is an adaptor which screws onto the front part of your camera, and goes around your lens...and then allows you to screw on filters/caps...probably not the best as it's always extended past your lens...but i couldn't find anything that would work...unless an s3is cap would fit over it?

Hands -
I found this site also - A third party supplier and it appears to be an exact replacement (knock on plastic - -)
http://www.uscamera.com/c84-1449.htm (external link)

It appears to be an Ebay type store:
http://myworld.ebay.com/uscamera/ (external link)

but I guess worst case you might be out of $12.

Also, if you get an exact replacement be sure to tie its tether to the camera strap. The easiest way is to draw the end of the closed tether around the camera strap and then open the loop and shove the cap through it, then tighten the resulting knot down. You don't even have to take the strap off.

The cap is designed to pop right off with little resistance if the lens deploys accidentally. This has happened to me several times, when the mode lever accidentally got touched. So I must balance this safety feature of not jamming the lens mechanism with the annoyance of a cap coming off now and then.

Who would have thought a plastic disc could be so complicated!

I don't think the last one had a tether and I lost count of how many times it landed on the floor

Visit http://www.cameraking.co.uk (external link) and search for: canon lens cap

This reveals the listing containing two different 58mm covers.

Meanwhile, thanks for the US options if the Canon call on Monday fails :)

The S3 and S5 caps are crap. I'm starting to think they made it that way so if you start to take aphoto not realizing the lens cap is on..once you zoom..it just falls off. Maybe Canon ment for that to happen. ( I'm unsure about the S1 and S2).

Since the alternative is that they'd jam up the lens as it extended, causing an error condition and possibly permanent damage, I'm sure they did intend them to come off easily.

Yeah I believe that too. So i haven't bothered really to worry about it. It's slightly annoying but you get use to it, and don't think twice avout it.

I have the lensmate 52mm adapter and the lens cap and it works perfect. The adapter also protects the lens.

I don't know what everyone is talking about with the lens cap annoying problem. Mine stays on fine, maybe some S5 IS caps weren't made properly because mine stays on just fine.

where is there anyone talking about the lens problem?...all other posts are offering ways to try and get a lenscap for the op...who is probably long gone by now...i think your post below is the only one that really talks about any problems with the caps

To all it may concern. May your lens cap falling off be your biggest problem in the world of photography.

It's true that the lens cap will pop off of these cameras when they're turnd on. It sure would be a mess if they didn't. As stated above, get a filter adapter, and a snap on lens cap. Then one of the world's biggest photography problems will be solved.
