I think you will be fine with sending it to the nearest facility. Less travel time the better. Maybe you want to drive it there

If it is feasible, it is the better option. I believe they give a higher priority to walk-ins. Plus, they are a little more forgiving on warrantee periods when you walk in. The Irvine repair center turned my gear around in less than a week - 30D, 17-55 and 70-200 f4. They said they weren't too busy at the time, so you may want to ask how busy they are when you send/drop off.
Overall, I was VERY pleased with the service, customer service and turn around time.
