I think you will be fine with sending it to the nearest facility. Less travel time the better. Maybe you want to drive it there :)

If it is feasible, it is the better option. I believe they give a higher priority to walk-ins. Plus, they are a little more forgiving on warrantee periods when you walk in. The Irvine repair center turned my gear around in less than a week - 30D, 17-55 and 70-200 f4. They said they weren't too busy at the time, so you may want to ask how busy they are when you send/drop off.

Overall, I was VERY pleased with the service, customer service and turn around time.

I asked the guy if they pay for shipping and he said I have to pay for the shipping to the facility and they send it back for free.

No. Tell them the lens is new, you are the orginal warranty owner and you want a prepaid label to Irvine CA. I've never had to pay to ship a lens to Canon within the warranty period. They will send you an email with a prepaid UPS label. Just print it out. Make sure you are nice, but don't ask who pays for shipping. Just say "when will I receive the prepaid UPS label for my troubles?".

I told the person I spoke to that it was new and even asked how they send me the shipping labels. I talked to three different people and they all said that I pay shipping to the location. They already sent me an email with the information on how to send it but they did not include a shipping label. Maybe the rules have changed?

Since you are in Long Island NY, why no take it personally to canon.
They are in NJ. I live in Queens NY and it takes me 1 hour and 10 minutes to get there.
Their service is excellent, I usually get my stuff ship to me within in days.

I doubt it. I just had my 300 F4 IS fixed, and they payed for all the shipping. The first time it went back they prep paid UPS ground. The second time it went back they paid for next day air - both ways.

I have to give them serious credit on resolving the problem. They were awesome about it the second time.

No idea. I looked on the site but I couldn't find one. If you call canon they will tell you where the one nearest you is located. Thats what I did.

I dropped my 24-70 down and embankment on to rocks.. ugh. I took it in to Canon and had it back in a week. They replace 2 of the element groups and repaired all of the damage and only charged me $200.00 of the $650.00 they could have charged.

I'd like to know more about this. I just dropped off my lens at the Irvine repair center and they quoted me nearly $750 to repair it, which is still less than the lens replacement value, but I'm hesitant to spend that kind of money for a "repaired" lens. I'm concerned that it won't continue to be the stellar lens I've grown to love. But if they quoted you $650 and you only paid a fraction....that would be awesome. I'd have no problem $300-400 for repair, but the closer it gets to $1,000 (one BTU = Basic Toy Unit), I get hesitant.

Did you figure out why they charged you less than the estimate? Are you happy with the repair?

I've sent lenses to Canon for service, and they've certainly wowed me each time. Lenses come back super crispy, clean, and quickly. I send my stuff to the NJ facility.

I wish I could say the same about my experiences with Canon Canada. It's the complete opposite. They don't fix things, things that are way off are all 'within spec' to them. They take forever... the longest was TWO MONTHS I was without my primary body. I sent in my 17-55 because the IS motor died. Not a speck of dust in it. I got it back with some dust inside. d'oh!! And they even said they cleaned it.

Don't know if there is a locator, but as far as I know, there are only two - Irvine, CA and NJ. There may be another one in the US, but I haven't heard about it.
