SD series vs. pana TZ

Anyone work with both SD series cameras and pana TZs? I'd like more zoom in a real small package. I have SD800 and 300. Very pleased with IQ, and love the menus and handling, but would just like more reach (and wide angle), so I'm looking basically for the SD800 with at least a 28mm starting point and 5X+ zoom.

Looking at the TZ3 and TZ5, specs indicated it might be a good fit, and I can handle the NR in higher ISO, but some samples I've seen at lower ISO (200 and below) still look processed to me.

Anyone ever directly compare and use the TZ to the SD, and can comment on IQ for both? Also, movie mode quality on both? Again, specs on TZ should put it ahead, but samples I've found on the internet show the SD as better.

I appreciate comments about other camers (Fuji, Nikon, G9 etc.) but I've already researched a bunch, and am just looking for feedback specifically on TZ vs. SD, if anyone has worked with both.

I've been playing around with my friend's TZ3 since I'm also looking for a extended zoom camera with a wide angle lens.

Not impressed with the TZ3 as many of the pics are often grainy and out of focus. Maybe I haven't spent enough time with it but I can't seem to get a good picture with or without a flash. Seems like it has a nice lens but the Venus processor can't make it into a nice picture. I'll have to post some examples later...

Video quality is good on the computer but haven't yet put it on my TV to judge the IQ. Also, with the TZ3, you can't zoom during filming but the TZ5 can zoom while filming.

So now I've been thinking of the SD870 because of its wide angle but wished it had more zoom...

Some pics taken over the weekend - taken with iA mode, iso 400, f/4.8 or so...Also note the "muted" colors, pics straight from the camera, no pp

I'm assuming your samples are with the TZ3? I think I'll stick for now with the SD800 for two reasons: I'll sacrifice the reach for the IQ (I can also crop and blow up a bit with 7MP) and I just did my taxes, so I'll need to wait on a new purchase :(

I still think I'll look at the SD890 when it comes out.

I have both TZ3 and SD850IS ( and a SONY). And I like Both. IQ-wise, both are goodif you don't view 100% on your LCD, . But if you view it in 100%, TZ3 ususally get a more grainy pictures. But the range of TZ3 from wide angle to telezoom is amazing!! So, TZ3 is a better choice given the range it offers... For daily use especially if you shoot a lot of people, I will pick Canon's SD (IS).I think you will not go wrong with either anyway.
