I took my 300D into them a few weeks ago under the 4 year warranty. Explained that the shutter button does not focus the camera on half press. Also that I wanted the viewfinder, focus screen, mirror and sensor cleaned. It was picked up Friday, didn't have time to play with it till yesterday. Same dirty viewfinder, same focus problems. Looked closer at the paper work and all they did was replace the kit lens. These guys are about the most incompetent camera repair men ever. I took it back today and wrote on the repair order myself. "when half press shutter button the camera does not focus. please repair or replace shutter button assembly, Please clean viewfinder and all internals of camera as this was a big selling part of the warranty". I should have it back or replaced by the 25th. I'm hoping for a replacement. I went over to look at the XSI and the sales lady was pushing it hard. I told her all I wanted was my camera fixed or replaced and she said she just gave a XTI to someone as a replacement last week and to bad they didnt wait a week or they would have gotten an XSI. Im keeping my fingers crossed for a new camera. Ill keep you guys informed but I am really hoping for a replacement, to get the shutter button assembly out you need to take everything out of the camera, major chore.

The XT is still available, so should Poorbuy choose to replace it might be with another XT.

Wayne, they have the 300D, so even the XT would be a step up.

Looks like you are getting a better camera either way... hopefully an XTi or XSi!!!!! (Or you could offer them the difference between the XSi and the 40D and get a 40D for like $300.... HAHAHAHA

Forgive me for being blunt, but you're being increadibly optimistic thinking Best Buy will do much more than take your money in exchange for a camera.

IOW, they really aren't a camera shop and to expect them to know anything about how to clean, calibrate or maintain a camera body once you take the box out of the store is really pressing your luck.

People ask all the time "What's the advantage of buying from a Camera Store?"

Frankly, you just found one...

While I do agree the "Geek Squad" probably has no clue about the internal workings of a DSLR.

They sold him an in house extended warranty. I'm sure it's the exact same wording as the warranty I got on my car speakers through best buy. I got the speakers 3 years ago and have since been through 3 sets of speakers. This last time I have had to pay the difference between my speakers and the current version of them. $20 for 2 speakers.

If they can't or do not have the ability to complete an inhouse warranty repair. Than they have to own up to either sending out to a canon facility or replace it with a new one on the shelf. How is that pressing his luck.

It shouldnt matter if you buy a PC console car stereo or camera you pay the extra money for their in house warranty for situations like these.

To the OP if you go in there state your case chances are they'll upgrade you with you possibly paying any difference in cost between cameras. If they dont raise holy hell till a manager shows up they'd rather get you fixed up fast than ruin their chances of selling more warranties while your there ranting about how screwy it is.

I was in a best buy awhile ago and they dont push me anymore for buying a camera because the person in charged went to my school. He never took a photography class or had the passion for photography. Its just a job that pays well. He told the workers in the camera area not to talk to me because i like to test them about the cameras. All they know is what is listed on the card in-front of the camera. Granted i dont know everything about cameras but its funny looking at their faces when I start talking like im speaking in a different language. You know you got them cause they start getting a glaze look in their eyes. My girlfriend gets the same look when i talk too her too. lol

When the shutter in my old 300d failed I took it back to BB with their warranty. Told them I needed the camera right away for a job would they just replace it with the current model, think it was the xt. I was told they will fix the 300d and send it back to me. I was also told that if they have to fix the same thing 3 times within the warranty period only then will they replace the camera with a new one.

good luck,

Eric

BB does not "fix" cameras (or most of the gear under their warranty for that matter). I am sure they just send it to canon if it is a big enough problem.

They are the first line of defense though, so they make sure there really is a problem with the gear before sending it to Canon.
