1 and 5 are great looking. The rest are really good. With Track meets, stuck out in a school on assignment from the paper, I often use different race heats, or shot-put throwers in order to find the sweet spot.

For long jump, you definitely got it with 1 and 5. I tried from everywhere else, but only low and from the front.

For PoleVaulting, I have liked a bit better the low from the ground and as close to the H as possible, that way I get the vaulter from below almost, and show some air between their body and the bar.

Running is tricky, I do stand on the grass (inside track) and use zoom -perhaps a bit of panning if needed- to get their photos. Personally, I have learned to like the image where the entire runner is showing, rather than cutting their legs out of the comp. By positioning myself a few yards before the finish line, I also can zoom in for a dynamic portrait of their chest and face, and the usual second-wind gesture.

Anyhow, I apologize if comments were not welcome. I was just working on some related material, and just got going.

Thanks for sharing, I like the quality of these.

Ah thanks I am always looking for critique and advice like that, so thanks:)

One thing I just started doing for pole vaulting is shoot the runner coming at me standing up vertically, then quickly drop to my knees and turn the camera horizontal and take the photo of them going over the bar. I dunno if it's the best strategy, but it's fun:P

It's what you feel comfortable with. When there are two photographers or more (my kind of gig), I am always looking at the other guy, so that the next days sport section does not turn out siamese images. I try to gain an edge by often composing differently, like you mention, just choosing your own way to do it. Sometimes it works, and others you just gotta wait for the next jumper to make some adjustments.

Rule of thumb for polevaulting: If you can see the parents of the jumper and the jumper above the bar at the same time, you might need some re-adjustments to your composition.
(Might be a redneck style).
If you use a 1200mm to capture the jump, you might need some readjustment.
If you jump on the big blue pad mid-jump to take the money shot, you might need to readjust your photo.
:D

Yep, shot wide open at 2.8 for all of these, and the IS was accidentally turned off for the majority of these shots, I can't tell the difference, can you?

IS shouldn't matter. The shutter speed should be high enough to freeze the action so it should also be well above min shutter speed to avoid camera shake.

Six and/or seven should make the paper! Good emotion, excitement, and powerful facial expressions.

Number 6 made me say Wow! The rest are good, but number 6 really caught my eye.

I liked them except for #4. If you can't see the vaulter's face, dump the image. Here's a few I like that I shot recently:
