I'm pretty stoked.
I caught a pretty great deal on a 40D kit w/ 17-85 on Ebay yesterday. No reserve, just a regular guy not one of those iffy ebay stores. Brand new, never opened, not refurb'd.

I had been watching it for a couple of days, and thought for sure the price was going to fly up at the end. Luckily, my nerd of a husband has a bid sniping program and we ended up snagging it right at the end. Not a nice thing to do, but I ended up saving myself a good $400 or so from what I'd have paid in a store for the same kit right now.

So I'm going into the city tomorrow to pick up my other 'supplies' - bag, tripod, etc etc. I'm picking up the 50mm lens as well. And I might look around online for a decent telephoto. When I was using my brother's Sigma (SD10?) I got a lot of use out of his 55-200 and found it handy to have.

Anyway I'm excited. I'm ALMOST as excited as when I had my first baby ;)

Can't wait to get it and start snappin'. I'm going to get together with a photog friend of mine (she taught a photography class I took last year) and she's a Canon girl so she's going to let me try out a couple of her lenses to see if I like them, and hopefully we can just play with the new camera a bit and help me get used to it.

Yep. It's a happy day for sure - cam should be in Wednesday or Thursday and then I can join in the fun on here :)

Congrats on the new camera, its a great thing!

One question, a tad off topic, are those sniping programs legal on eBay? I thought they detected them and stopped them working?

Hope it's not a fake 40D there is a few of those going around. And I hope you didn't get taken.

Yeah, me too, it does sound like a substantial saving. I hope you get your purchase.

Not sure about the programs 'legality'. I honestly didn't ask. I'm not usually the one that does the Ebaying in our house - I don't have the patience. I'm just as likely to go pay full price for it somewhere just to avoid dealing with waiting for an auction to end. I don't mind the 'buy it now' ones but normal auctions get on my nerves.

There were I think 3 other people doing the same thing at the end. In the last maybe 10 seconds of the auction, along with our final bid, there were 3 or 4 others almost nearly on top of each other.

I think the guy's legit - from his emails back/forth with my husband I think he works somewhere where he gets a manager's discount on the cameras (he's sold a couple others in the past) and then he resells on Ebay. His feedback is excellent. I'm always doubtful of anyone on Ebay - we've gotten bit a couple times - but I feel good about the whole thing.

Savings seem high - but only because I'm saving my sales tax, shipping is a bit cheaper with this guy, and the only places to buy them locally (which is what I was comparing to) are Black's and FutureShop - which aren't exactly low priced...haha I could be being generous with how much I tihnk I saved but I'm pretty sure to walk into Blacks and get the same kit is about $1700 after taxes. I think with the conversion to CDN and shipping from this fella, it's a bit less than $1400, I'd have to double check my PP acct but that sounds about right.

Just read the reviews and if your gut feeling says pull out pull out ok?

I don't like to see people getting ripped off.

Usually that means the account was hijacked and eBay figured it out....

Always a risk to buy from some sellers. I found a hijacked listing of a 5D the other day. Selling it for under $500.

It's here!! :)
The guy ended up being a pretty great seller to work with. I'm pretty happy with the whole thing.
Once my insane 2 yr old gets to bed and I get a few minutes of peace, I'm going to sit and maybe learn how to use the stinkin thing ;)

That's what I have been doing for the last 4 hours....my 40d arrived today. Had to call in sick....man this thing is fun. Took some pics of the daughter at 1600 ISO and they look pretty darn good. The sun just came out (I am in Washington, after all), so I'll get some outdoor practice this afternoon as well. Enjoy your new toy...God knows I have enjoyed mine today!
