I did a search, but couldnt find an answer.
So what are the differences between a mk 1 and a mk 2 of the 16-35L lens?

Bigger filter thread, better edge sharpness and more money.;)

MkII is amazingly controlled shooting into the sun.

Heh, really. No sarcasm. I find it holds the color and contrast very well. Will post examples if you like (I'm not a fan of cluttering someone's question with images unless requested).

I love my II, just sucks that it had to be made with an 82mm filter size as all my other Ls are the normal 77mm.

Unless you're shooting FF, you may not see any difference, other than flare control. Not that the Mark I was bad, but it could be better. In the event it does flare, I just hold my hand out in between the sun/lens. This wide of a lens, flare is almost inevitable and the hood is a little... Goofy.

What kept me from upgrading is the 82mm filter threads. I have a good selection of stuff in 72mm and 77mm - hell if I'm gonna go and get even bigger filters to accomodate the Mark II at even more money.

I love the Mark I, FWIW. Bonus - you can get a good deal on them now.

The II was my first EF lens so I started with 82mm.. I can see how that is a drag if you already have a set in 77. Agreed, the hood is super goof.

^^ Did not know that. It is a helluva AF'er... locks on better than the old design of the 24L for me on a 5D.
