How would one mount speedlight to an OCtabox or large softboxes

I've got a Canon 40D and a 580 exII flash and 430 flash and an ST-E2 transmitter.

I've seen the small softbox kits by lastolite, AZ) digital, etc.

But I would like to try using them with medium to large [48" and up] softboxes and Octaboxes.

Any one done this and can list what stands and mounts to use [and probably need a sand bag to help hold down].

The boxes I would use have elinchrom or bowens speed rings.

Canon T3I, Canon 15mm, 50mm, 85mm, 135mm; Sigma 30mm; Canon 580ex II and 430 flash; Interfit Stellar Strobes; Lastolite hi-lite background; more

I'm afraid you're gonna be looking at a home-brew solution. The DIY Projects sticky in this forum can offer considerable guidance. Here's one clever solution that fits your needs perfectly:

Thanks Dave. Yeah, I saw the stickies but was hoping someone already had an off the shelf solution. Looks like I'll have to get someone to drill holes in an L bracket.

What's the benefit of using small flash with big SB than say using strobe with the SB?

I would say it is portability. If you want to shoot on location or outdoors and don't have portable power for your studio strobes, then you can just bring your hotshoe flashes with you wherever you go and still use a large softbox.

Well, there is a ludicrously priced (though apparently nicely made) off the shelf solution:

In any case, it probably locks you into using Westcott modifiers (which is not necessarily a bad thing).

- portability, including not needing any obscenely priced power packs

and it's what I happen to have, so I might as well push the limits on it before going to a strobe set. It's worth the cost of mounts to figure out if will work before going to strobes. If I get good quality boxes to begin with, I should be able to use with strobes if speedlights and boxes won't cut it.

thanks Rock Photo Star

the metal is from a old brace that I found in the garage. The Cold shoe for the pocket wizard came with the swivel bracket and the hot shoe I got from flashzebra.com (external link). The speedring is an extra photoflex knock off, that I got from ebay for $1.00. I was luck that the metal piece worked out without having to make any bends.

Wow. It looks like that metal brace is custom made for using a flash with a SB. Very cool. If you find any more "old braces" laying around, will you send one to me? ;)

Here is the setup that Lotto put up. You will see my attempt further in the post below.

https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=444190

I did this with a small softbox as well as a large amovna softbox.
