Zev

Sorry to hear that! I have been handed my bag by security more than once only to find they didn't close it. Once with a Pelican 1514 when they handed it to me flat, they then stood it up and it dumped everywhere!

Good tip!

I just sent you an email about packing a tripod; it's a very nice way to pack when travelling to the third world (third world is also a nice place to have a safety strap for your camera). Hope you like it.

I can pack all my gear in a backpack, and include some padding(extra cloths) so I'm sure I can take my gear on an airplane. I don't have a single problem waiting for the security to check my "bag". I have nothing to hide.

Also, again, pack a piece of clothing, then a piece of equipment, then a piece of clothing, ect.. when packing a backpack. I ride my sport bike to and from shoots to save on gas, and that's what I do to keep my stuff from gettting bumped around and to absorb the shock from riding.

Also when you sit your bag down, just ask yourself if you would sit a baby down there.

Matt

I have seen it. It seems to touch on the obvious basics. I am looking past the obvious basics. Over the years I have come up with and encountered some very specific packing skills that let me do trips with nearly zero baggage.

This summer while shooting an assignments I flew around the world 1.5x in 4 days and 20hrs in a single legal carry on bag, that included all my clothes and camera gear.....and I could wear the bag while shooting.

Last week in 3.5 days I flew completely around the world shooting a mix of assignments in four cities, four countries, on three continents, all in a set of Newswear Pouches and a small North Face backpack.

With my packing skills in-tact I am looking to others to find out their personal tips and tricks!

Besides........why would I want to give away some camera straps to American Photo :)

Gotcha. You are going to be hard to help -- sounds like you have it down pat!

I emailed you my tips, but they seem a bit obvious too.

Let me challenge you, then. Lets take your first trip. Can you tell us specifically what you packed, and what bag you packed it in? I think that would be rather interesting.

I emailed you my clever tips two days ago..... Did I win? :)

Flying With Fish Camera Strap Give Away.....We have three winners!

...........well after sorting through 194 packing tips submitted by readers of Flying With Fish, I narrowed it down to three. I ended up choosing my final packing tips with a "blind review" where I copied and pasted the relevant text into an MS Word file without any trace of the submitting persons info From here the final 25, then 13, then 3 answers were narrowed down.

To read the top three answers take a moment to visit: http://flyingwithfish.blogspot.com …bmitted-packing-tips.html (external link)

Thanks to all who sent along your tips! I'll post a few more reader submitted tips in my Friday round-up.

If you just can't get all your camera gear into your carryon, utilize clothing for padding. Socks work especially well for lenses, when double or triple layered...

In some areas you cant buy condoms thats just a thought. The vacuum seal bag things I herd are also a great investment.

Haha! That cracked me up.

I carry the large pieces of my equipment in my Dry Zone 200 backpack, and the rest along with my laptop in my small Tamrac Rolling Bag. I never check my equipment. I don't truct the airport equipment not to smash everything to pieces. I've had to many pieces of luggage destroyed, even so called indistructable bags.
