Yeah, really... "Bottom of the bunch." That may be true, more so on paper than in real life, but you'll never see the difference in your images. They're all fantastic lenses.

If you want f/2.8 with IS (and weathersealing) there's only one game in town. I know I'll never give up my 70-200mm f/2.8L IS. ;)

I am not trying to imply that the 70-200mm F2.8L IS is not a great lens. It just seems everyone raves about the F4L IS and I know mine is very sharp. It is probably a mental block more than anything. It seems like getting rid of the F4L IS, paying an extra $800 and getting a lens that may be lower in IQ, even if it is on paper, is strange. It is a personal thing. I know if I get the F2.8L, I will want to use it in other applications where I would wish I had gotten the F2.8L IS.

I can just see the future. I started with the 70-200mm F4L, went to the 70-200 F4L IS, now thinking about the 70-200mm F2.8L and eventually it will be the 70-200mm F2.8L IS. I am thinking I should just skip the middle man.

Go for it... f/2.8L IS. You'll never regret having f/2.8 - or IS. ;)

How about getting a 135/2 and a 1.4x which you can use on other lenses?

+1

I've been trying to justify the purchase of that lens for a while myself.

Even in good light, lot of times the bg is bad and you need to blur at by shooting at f2.8 which a f4 lens can't do. IS or no IS depends on what else you shoot. Should be a non issue for sports.

Crap!!! Decisions, decisions. If I get the 70-200mm F2.8L IS, I would get 280mm F4 with IS using my 1.4X TC. This would kind of make the 300mm F4L IS redundant, except when I use it with my 1.4X TC.

Argh.....

1.4xTC on 70-200mm f2.8 IS is not that good from what I have seen. I haven't had a chance to try it myself. Will do it over the weekend.

Hmmm... it is pretty good on 70-200mm F4L IS and 70-200mm F4L non-IS lenses.

See everyone has their definition of good.

For me 300mm/400mm f2.8 IS with 1.4xTC - Excellent
500/600mm with 1.4xTC - very good
400mm f5.6 with 1.4xTC - very good but notch below 500/600mm with 1.4xTC, IMHO

Now I do hear that 1.4xTC on 70-200mm f4IS is real good. I don't have that lens.

I've used both the 1.4x and 2x on my 70-200mm f/2.8L IS... I've been perfectly happy with the results from both, though obviously the 2x is a little lower quality. I didn't notice any obvious degradation from the 1.4x.

Well, I placed my order. I ordered from buydig.com because they were slightly cheaper than B&H (plus free shipping) and B&H was out of the 300mm. I ordered

70-200mm F2.8L IS
300mm F4L IS
2.0x II Extender (to play around with)

This place is a bad influence on people. Now I really have to get off my butt and sell my 70-200mm F4L and 70-200mm F4L IS.
