Shoot 3200ISO?? Why not? (3 pics)

Went to a local ballet today and shot a few photos at 3200 (with the 300D hack). I didn't expect this kind of quality. The first picture is the uncropped original (scaled for the web). Second is a 100% crop of the her face, and 3rd is with a little noise removal. A little tweaking on the color will make a decent photo.

The photo was 1/250 at f/4, hand-held using a 200mm Zuiko Olympus lens and a Canon 300D (Rebel +hack), in RAW mode.

I AM surprised. I don't think I've ever gone past ISO-1600

that is amazing ..

400 on my G3 was so full of noise.

ISO 1600 on the D30 is quite unacceptable ... that is one gripe I have about the camera.

You can also shoot ISO3200 *without* the Wasia firmware hack...just set to ISO1600, -1EV, shoot in RAW. Then add the stop back in RAW conversion. There's enough exposure laititude to do that and you've just used the shutter speed you would have had if set to ISO3200 and +0EV.

What noise remove software did you use?

...and how do you use a 200mm Oly lens on a 300D?

I use an OM to Canon EOS adapter from http://www.cameraquest​.com/adaptnew.htm

It requires 100% manual operation, but I get to use all my "old" Oly lenses.

I'm using NeatImage with just the default settings. I haven't had time to play with all the options yet, but I'm quite impressed with what it can do. Worth it in my opinion.

i filtered this twice with neat image... did a little bit of bluring and smudging, unsharp mask, and a little more bluring...

you loose some detail, but i think it looks good, considering there is very little noise left, and this is a full sized crop.

Looks great xdjoynerx. I figured a little more softening and denoising could be done, but haven't had the time yet. What you've managed to pull out of the photo is amazing considering the size of the face in the original.
