that's really good! A rental car is about $300 (with taxes and everything for a week....so it's got to be less for 3 days)...

well, it's just tentative...but Dan's cousin lives down there and he and his wife are old like us but super fun...I KNOW they'd be models for us if we asked them.

okay I've got a plan since Dan refuses to say what he wants to do this evening. He's getting off early so I thought I'd take him to pro photo to see if there's anything he wants to spend his bday money on (me driving...he hates to drive in portland) then to Chili's just south of Portland for dinner and top the evening off at Fry's (guy heaven).

Does this sound like guy fun?

Maybe he found an F1 and he's gone to the dark side..

Only F-1 out there that matters is Canon's.

would it hold the M3 and the 70-200? (the problem I have with the lighter tripods is that they aren't super stable with the moderate size gear) I have a nice CF tripod that holds 25lbs and works great for the big lens/camera combo.

I put mine (1D3 and 70-200 2.8 IS) on it with the 486 head (light, for traveling) cranked all the way to one side directly opposite a leg; about the unsteadiest combination you could find (trying to lift the leg) and it's as steady as my Manfrotto 3444 CF (which is, however, a foot higher). With the center column up, it's not especially steady, which is the real weakness. Ed Rader got the 614, 4-section legs for a bit of extra height without using a center column. The legs open out about flat and it's a 2-part center column, so it goes quite low. If you're needing over 3-1/2 ft. of height, I wouldn't, but for flowers, either on the level of, looking down on, or looking up (in shrubs and low tree branches), it'd do. I've taken 10 sec. exposures with the 70-200 2.8 IS and 20D on it, at night so light trails would show if it was shaky.
