Lisa:

That's a darned shame about the 100-400. I don't know why you seem to have so much trouble with that particular lens. I've owned two copies, and they both worked fine. The one I'm using now was dropped, and had to be repaired by Canon. Before the repairs, it would still autofocus....it was the manual focus ring that was stuck. Otherwise the thing was working perfectly.

Just out of curiosity, have you tried it on another body? I'm wondering if maybe there is some kind of issue going on with the micro adjustment setting on your Mk III.

I don't know Chief. I really thought I would have a reasonable chance, seeing that there have been several decent copies of this lens floating around this thread alone. But one of the copies I tested in the store, I couldn't even get a sharp looking shot at 400 on the LCD. I bought the one that I thought was sharp

I didn't try it on the 40D. I could micro adjust it to the M3 but the 40D doesn't have that option so I didn't even bother trying it on that body. I was thinking about (since all I really want is a walk around lens) picking up the new tamron 28-300 VC (is that the one you just bought?) because if it is, the IQ is certainly better than the current 1-4 I've got.'

Suzy, glad you got a good one :)

I would definitely want to check images with that lens on the 40D just to be sure there isn't something going on with the microadjustment on the 1Dm3.

I'm not short. I'm concentrated awesome!

Don't know yet really. I'm testing it out for the U12 game at 3:30. My younger son's field is so small, the 70-200 is too long. :)

I pay $29.00 per month for internet service with good enough speed for my needs... 4350 kb/s down load and 408 kb/s upload on my last speed test. I use Direct TV satellite service and pay $62.00 per month. Comcast seems kind of expensive.

That and Comcast isn't in our area :-D

Its a shame you have been so unlucky. I think you should try it on the 40D as Tom suggest just to make sure it is the lens and not a MKIII 100-400 combo issue. I think mine is a good copy. It can't be completely bad if I can get the moving gocart sharp at 1/125s.

The gocarts were harder to shoot than the normal cars. I shot 244 pan shots in total and just deleted 216 leaving 28 reasonable good shots. Here is one more of them. This one at 1/80s.

yeh super A karts shift 1/80th is dam good though.
A kart is much more unstable than a car mainly due to being much softer it flexes excessively on all axis.

I think you're supposed to sacrifice a chicken before you use it the first time.

Bet you didn't do that.
