I think you're supposed to sacrifice a chicken before you use it the first time.

Bet you didn't do that.

No no you got that completely wrong. You are supposed to shoot a duck (or a box) as the first thing when testing a new lens.

Oh, so that's why my 100-400L is so sharp! I nuked a chicken right after I bought it!

My name is Lonnie, but I answer to Thomas too.

oooh, and I neglected that too.

When I returned the 1-4, I bought the tamron 28-300 VC (image stabilized lens). Brought it home and tested it on some flowers and thought "hmmmm this looks like it's focusing where it's supposed to and is sharp" so I actually did the focus test on it and it's dead on.

It's a $600 lens vs. a $1400 lens. It's noisier and hunts in low light but it's sharp and will totally work for a walk around lens. And surprisingly to me even the 6.3 long end AF's on the 40D. So, I'm happy and saved $.

I've been basically happy with mine. I can always paint my own red ring on it.

it's much noisier than I expected...but if it works that's all that matters. I was impressed with the reviews I read last night.

I really considered trying yet another 1-4 but it's a 3 hr tour to get to the camera store and back and I was tired of making it and my luck is BAD with that lens.

Actually, with this one being light, it's really perfect for me. All my lenses are heavy so a nice light walkabout lens will work well and I'll be happy.

I didn't know you bought this one (there's another one that's not VC but the same focal length). You said "cheap" and in my world $300 is cheap

Didn't know there was a difference. I guess I didn't get the cheap one....

The box says

AF28-300mm F/3.5/6.3 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) Macro

It also has a 'VC' in the upper right-hand corner

It also says, "Model A20E" for Canon

I don't know. I think it cost around $600 and change (no sales tax that day).

that's the same one I got.

There's one that is an older model (this one was just released in Feb) that doesn't have the image stabilization and the IQ isn't supposed to be quite as good.

I read up on it, the sigma 120-400 (there's not yet much info on it...only a few owners so far) last night. The sigma is a faster lens and and additional $300 to the price and larger, also goes to 400mm. The tamron is supposed to lave less CA, less barrel distortion, be sharper and lighter.

i have been eyeing the 120-400 at sigma4less it is 780
i have a problem with lenses that try to be a all aroun lens like a 28-300
i just dont think a lens with that different of a focal range could be all that good
but thats my opinion
