those turned out great :)
I especially like the lizard shot...she got some amazing detail..I don't think I ever got that close.

and the link isn't working...

I cropped that one pretty tight to get the look I wanted.

Permagrin wrote in post #5359659 (external link)
okay I got John's link to work...he has too many http's in it....

and the lizard looks like (if it's the same lizard in the other two shots) a desert spiny lizard.

Link is fixed... I was pretty sleepy when I made that post.

Here (external link) it is again. I checked it this time...

I just started a thread in forum talk. I'm hoping it will be a profitable discussion...but I doubt it will stay that way.

I am afraid that any hope for an unbiased discussion of other brands is going to be pretty nonexistent. Too many people with fanboy estimations!

I'm afraid you are right. It's unfortunate too...because it could be very useful. Personally it would have saved me months of indecision and frustration.

I am soo tired. I got up at 5 am this morning. Travelled 3,5 hours for todays motorsport event. Shot a lot of photos (3x4gb  ) got a lot of practice panning. Not sure how many good results I got. It was sunny which resulted in a lot of blown highlights. I just got home at 715 pm. I am now downloading the photos.

I didn't use my 400 f/5.6 alot. I was planning on doing that but the track was just not suitable for it because we were so close to the action. So I used my 100-400 all day on my MK III. But I did take a few portrait shots with my 5D and the 400 prime.

no, it means I'm not.

after all my research I found the D3 to be more than adequate. I think I'd really like it. And I found 3 lenses from the 14-200 range that are also stellar. The problems, for me are that I'd not be able to afford anything beyond 200mm I'd lose my 300 2.8 (which is one awesome piece of glass) and really, it could take years now that I'm poor for me to afford to add the 200-400 to the kit. Financially it's just not worth it. And eventually the M3 will either be fixed or grow old and obscure. I've learned my lesson though...and will not buy another new model from canon (or anyone actually) until it's been proven. I was happy with the 5D except for the dust and it's no one's fault but my own that I gave it up.

The price of the glass was the determining factor for me. For some, that may not be the case.

I think Nikon has a great camera with the D30 but like you, Lisa, I can't see piddling away that kind of money. I can afford to buy it but why? Everyone thinks even my mediocre photos are fabulous so my money will go towards other fun activities....like traveling and my grandson :)

BTW, Lisa. Your photos are wonderful. You should relax about them a bit and just enjoy them more. I have been tempted to ask you if you would fix a few of my boo-boos because you do such great work!

Life is hard...but I just take it one photograph at a time.

thanks Mo. You are the second person in as many days, to remind me that I've lost focus. And I have. I'm trying to get it back though :) When I shot that wedding and the M3 let me down, I felt like my feet were cut out from under me. (It really was equipment issues...I'll be the first to say when the failure is the photographer :) ) And re-looking at them again (I have to because I'm putting together their wedding book) made me realize that I'd blown some key shots...and the anxiety just came back.

Anyway, I've made my decision now, based on all the information I could find and am content with it. But it's been a while in coming.

As far as my photos go...I KNOW I'm hard on myself. I try not to be, but all I see is the mistakes I've made. Becky very kindly exhorted me last night, to spend some time shooting (to remember the reason I became a photographer in the first place), just because I love to shoot...and as soon as the weather clears, I'm going to do just that.

And I'd be happy to help you if you need it, but honestly, I'm sure you'll find that however you process your photos you'll be happiest with what you do. I've done some processing for people and ultimately, it's not been the "vision" they had for the photo. You know?

Two portraits from today. Shot with 5D + 400 f/5.6L. First one if our "guide" on the workshop. He is a proffesional mortorsports photographer so we got some nice tips.

One thing I had no idea about (and can't prove right or false) was that he said panning shots from right to left is easier to get correct than panning shots from left to right. And it has to do with the direction of the shutter curtains.

very nice :)

and that's interesting to know...I usually try (never been successful yet) to pan left to right.

I don't think there are a lot of us that can afford that luxury either...plus I still think that Canon glass is superior to the Noink offerings....with a couple of exceptions that Canon has dropped the ball on. A 200-400 twist zoom IS really should be coming before too long.

I'm still debating selling my current bodies and switching to a 1Dmk3 and 1Dsmk3 combo. I really want to do both at once if I switch, simply to keep the batteries the same....I have enough different chargers running in the car when I go out shooting.

I can understand that...I hate it that I've got two separate chargers to haul when I go on a trip. The good news is that the M3 charger charges 2 batteries together and the batteries are small and longer lasting. The charger is still large though...wish it wasn't

and it would be really sweet to have a 200-400 twist zoom!!

There has been discussion over panning for years Tommy....even in the film days, there were people that claimed it was easier to pan cars traveling right to left because the shutter curtain was working for you instead of against you...I don't know if I buy that or not...I've seen plenty of great shots from both directions...I think the images are more the result of a good photographer than the direction of the pan.
