even with a tripod I can't make a good pan :lol::lol: I don't think I've ever done it well

my best shot to date is this one and there's too much motion blur in the eagle wings

I have an inverter in the car...so I have one charger for the 1D series batteries...one charger for the xxD series batteries and one charger for flash batteries plugged in most of the time. I try to keep a set of each topped off and ready to go always. I would gladly go to just two chargers....

There has been discussion over panning for years Tommy....even in the film days, there were people that claimed it was easier to pan cars traveling right to left because the shutter curtain was working for you instead of against you...I don't know if I buy that or not...I've seen plenty of great shots from both directions...I think the images are more the result of a good photographer than the direction of the pan.

Yeah and it certainly requires a skilled one to determine the difference because the technique have to be spot on every time for a comparison to make sense.

The eagle shot isn't that bad Permie...you have the motion going on...the eye is fairly sharp...heck...some of us would kill just to have the opportunity to see an eagle at that range in the wild.

wow!

I have an actual plug in (not sure if that's what you mean by an inverter but it looks like a standard wall socket), in my car...so it's pretty useful for charging everything...I don't bring the flash battery charger though. I just bought 2 dozen flash batteries that I charge before an event. It's easier for me :lol:

I was shooting at 1/80th, iso 800 (it was really low light) but for panning, don't you shoot at a low shutter speed anyway? I'm really ignorant in this area.

Very nice portraits, Tommy. I had no idea about the panning thing. I'm mostly useless in both directions though!!

And great job on the Eagle, Lisa. You have movement there.

Those panning shots of mine were two shots in about 200 or so... ;)

Panning shots are with as low a shutter speed as you can get and still maintain detail in the subject!

we have a race track locally...I wonder (we're a rural community for the most part) if I have to have special permission to take an slr in...I've never been interested in racing at all (don't shoot me) but it would be good practice for things like panning.
