One thing I had no idea about (and can't prove right or false) was that he said panning shots from right to left is easier to get correct than panning shots from left to right. And it has to do with the direction of the shutter curtains.

personaly id disagree and say it makes no relevance what so ever. but then what do i know.
also a good panning tecnique can be easily attained with some simple steps the hard bit is nailing the trigger at the right time to minimize parallax shift

I can understand that...I hate it that I've got two separate chargers to haul when I go on a trip. The good news is that the M3 charger charges 2 batteries together and the batteries are small and longer lasting. The charger is still large though...wish it wasn't

once saw a small form charger to charge one battery wasn't much bigger than a normal plug !

we have a race track locally...I wonder (we're a rural community for the most part) if I have to have special permission to take an slr in...I've never been interested in racing at all (don't shoot me) but it would be good practice for things like panning.

No should get in fine.
email them before hand and chances are they'll let you track side small places are normally happy to help

Hehe I am not really into motorsport but photographing it is fun

Here is one of the first pans that was fairly successfull. Too bad I cut off the nose and the back.

One thing I can definately say is panning from the inside of the track is easier than from the outside.

Some folks pan at 1/20 and some have to pan at 1/2000...I hate the know-it-alls in the motorsports section that start ripping a person on their first attempt. They seem to forget they were new too...panning is a talent that not everyone is going to master. And more importantly, a shot that a photographer takes of his favorite driver is going to have a whole lot more meaning to him than a shot someone else took...even if it is "technically" better.

Most local tracks don't have a problem...the "track photographer" sometimes gets a little nervous....hehehe

I tried as low as 1/60 though I doubt any of those will be good. The above was shot at 1/125.

Panning at 1/20 is hard! But amazing when captured!

That is a fairly successful start...the framing comes later!

And yes...the inside is way easier than the outside.

There are some....hehehe:lol: I used to shoot at one of the little Saturday night dirt tracks in NY....for the local paper...The track shooter would literally foam at the mouth about anyone other than him having access to the infield to shoot.
