Post your best Libero shots

We started this discussion on another thread, and it was suggested to start a new one- Here goes-

The Libero seems to be the hardest volleyball position to shoot- It's never clear when the ball may end up there, they can play anywhere in the back court, and finding a clear shot from a good angle is a challenge.

For fun- post your best Libero shots and we'll see how we did!

I always thought this shot was considered a "dig".

simply put, the Libero is the player wearing the different team jersey, and a defensive player primarily.

More often than not, they will be the ones saving the balls, thus seeing them in action is usually very common and more often then not, they will be doing a dig

We should just create generic "Volleyball photo sharing thread" - don't believe there is one of those. Rather than limit to libero shots. What do you think? I know there's one for gymnastics which I contribute my other daughters photos.

Feel free to do that here if you wish. It's the boys' season now- I am sure there will be some worth sharing.

A libero is only defensive, he/she cannot attack the ball - though they now allow them to serve as to they couldn't when the position was first introduced. They wear a jersey seperate from the rest of the team to inform officials they're in (there's also a libero tracking sheet at the scorers desk). They do not have to report in as a regular sub, can sub in for anyone but only in the back row, except on serve - they can only serve for one person. They actually get the most action I would think as a libero is usually in the serve recieve (depending on how many the team is using from 2 - 6 person) and they usually set up around the hits for the dig. At least that's how I used mine.

The hitting shots were taken with a 135mm f2.0. One of the gyms in our area has an elevated viewing area, looking straight "up the court". It's my best opportunity for that kind of shot, since that angle is required to see faces over the net. Our boys are jumping just about high enough to get their wrists over the net, so getting a face without having it through the net is a tough shot.

When I am closer to the floor, I will usually use the 85mm 1.8.

After watching my boys play volleyball for 5 years, I still do not understand all of the rules- especially the restrictions on the libero and the substitutions. Fun game to watch though, and challenging to shoot.

Lots of people still don't. In two previous tournaments (G-U13), I've had a coach send a libero to change out of their special jersey into a standard one, then subbed her in, and another who tried to play her in the front row. Not only was it scary that they tried it, it was compounded by the refereeing coach not realizing it was a problem, and having to involve the tournament director. And one of those coaches is a former college player. But, my 12 and 14yr olds both knew that it was wrong in both cases, and were laughing at the buffoons who were involved.

I got replaced by a teacher as a varsity coach this year after starting to turn the program around, the kids protested the move but the school couldn't do nothing about it because it's in the teacher contract that teachers get coaching postitions even if they're not qualified - you put our qualifications head to head she would never get the job. (I'm teacher certified btw and still hate the fact they get tenure and little clauses like that but thats a whole diff. thread for a whole diff. forum). Anyways, she was a college player and one of the girls asks if she can try out for libero again as she played it last year, the "coach" looks at her and asks "what's a libero?" You have to just laugh it's so pathetic sometimes, never heard of that libero trick but know you can do it in between games - just not in the same game.

mine doesn't have an elevated area, and even if I had, my girls team doesn't jump high enough to give me a clean shot like what you have.

The elevated gallery makes all the difference. Without it, the best I've done for hitters is below- I like the shot, but I much prefer the earlier submission.
I threw in another one- She's not the Libero, but it was a good defensive shot that I was lucky enough to get. Part of her is cropped out of the frame, this is the down side to the prime lens- sometimes things are a little too close.


I'll stop with my pictures for a while- I hope to see some others posted here!

It looks like I may have oversharpened these when they were resized- my originals look smoother.
