MTF Charts

I was looking through Canon's website, looking at their lenses and they all seem to offer up this mysterious chart with a series of numbers vertically and horizontally with some assorted dotted and solid lines.

I thought I knew a thing or two about lenses but these charts are a total mystery to me. What on earth are these charts documenting?

Keep in mind that Canon's MTF charts are based on theoretical things. Some other brands use actual lens tests to do their MTFs.

remember whe you are looking at those MTF charts and you own a cropped body the measurments to 13 are the only ones that matter to you. One of the good things about using "normal" lenses with croppped bodies is you can get less expensive glass because you are alway only using the "sweet spot" of the glass.
