If the hard drive had corrupted sectors, then when Windows (or Mac) tried to write to that sector, it would become corrupted as well. It has been my experience that Windows especially will be able to "function" even if the drive is beginning to fail. However, you will notice little things here and there, that are starting to not act right, until the whole drive fails, or the file system becomes unstable.
