I went out to the lake this morning looking for loons - they were still there but widely dispersed now that most of the ice is gone. While I was sitting on the shore hoping a loon would come by, this little horned grebe came right up in front of me. Unfortunately the angle of the light wasn't ideal, but I got a few shots. Then I watched the loons for a while, they were very talkative. It was a nice morning.

Those are truly beautiful! Wonderful work. What lens, or lens combo? The look very sharp.

Best wishes, Don

Thanks, it was a 1D Mk III on a 500 f/4 with 1.4x teleconverter. The EXIF is on the photos so you can see all the details if you use Opanda IExif (external link) or something similar.

Great job despite the lighting challenge.

Excellent shots, Liz! I'd love just to see one of these. So far I've been limited to seeing only the pied-billed grebe.

Thanks for the comments all, there were so many different types of water birds out the last few days, and it was interesting to see and identify them. Grebes are tiny! This little one was nearby where I was sitting, and then it just popped up in front of me. I was really wishing at that point the light was behind rather than in front of me.

Great shots of the Horned Grepe in full breeding plumage. You captured it's beauty perfectly. :-)

Best regards

These are very nice. I actually think the light on that first one is great.

Thanks, actually I should clarify - the light is very nice, just the angle is wrong. ;) I'd much rather have the grebe looking at me and light on its entire body. Oh well, sometimes you have to take what you can get!

Nice shots Liz. Angle may not be perfect but it was close enough. It could have been cloudy ;)
