CMOS vs Film - Colour Responses

I have recently changed from a film SLR to a 20D (nice!).

The first thing I noticed about the images is the colour is fairly natural, more muted than my G3. Unfortunately most people perceive this response as dull thanks to over saturated films such as Kodak Gold!

Anyway I digress, my question is, how do I mimic (or can I?) the particular responses of different films I have used in the past?

For landscapes I often used Fuji Velvia, for portraits I used Kodak Portra (160VC). Being able to set the 20D up for either of these would be great!

Whne I was using a point and shoot digicam I thought the images were great. I was dissapointed when I got my first DSLR as I thought the photos were flat and murky. While that may be true I do see the advantage. I am now in control and not my camera. I am not sure how to mimic sertain film, but I do play with photos in PS that do look like high saturation film. Just play in PS and you will get it. I guess a few PS pluggins that mimic those types of film would be cool, and perhaps profitable to whoever makes them...Dean

i have seen actions/filters for photoshop that emulate different films
But i cant remember where i saw them. Might have a link on my pc at work. i have a look at work tommorrow.

Excellent! Thanks for that, I was more interested in the Velvia effect, as the standard response fron the 20D seems simular to Kodak Portra, and is ideal for portrait work.

Now all I need is a custom action that can do cross processing effects!

These are pretty kewl (they work on mac and windows)

I am overdue for good color management hardware. Plus I think my 10D has gotten me used to less color saturation. Anyway, my question for people using this velvia action is: what intensity do you set for velvia effect (10 to 100)?

it changes for me....but its usually 30-60. I just find any higher way too saturated, but then again....Kodak doesnt give me a choice for in camera processing (darn them!)....so...they're pretty punchy strait out. It'd be alot different for a 10D w/ neutral settings im sure.

I really like this Adobe Velvia Action.
Ulike others, it doesn't equally increase saturation on all colours equally.
I really like what it does to the blues without losing detail in reds, etc.

That is not the first time it's happened to me. Very embarassing. I'm downloading SP2 for XP now which is supposed to block popups.

Try the Google plug in for IE, does pop up blocking and saves you from any 'unpleasant' side effects of SP2 8)

As for the actions, trying them now...

I am having a ton of trouble downloading it. I did sign up but nothing happens when I hit the download link...Dean
