Hey everyone, just got back from Vegas where I attended my second NHRA Event. As usual it was a freaking blast! There were some tricky lighting conditions at times but I think I got some decent shots.

All of these were shot with my Canon 30d and a 24-105 f/4L IS.

Nice shots. I like #3 particularly. Its a shame there are so many obstructions at these races, but that's the price you pay from having to shoot from the stands!!! I'm looking forward to the Atlanta races at the end of this month. I'm sure I'll come across the same issues.

Yeah, it can get a little tricky shooting at that track once the shade starts creaping in, but it looks like you did well.

Thanks I am pretty happy with the results... I was getting bit by the mixed lighting at first so I was using exposure lock on the shaded area which worked well but eventually went to manual settings. I am very happy with the shots I got this year compared to last year. We were sitting in Section C Row 16 same as last year, they are great seats.

As mentioned by Fat Albert there are always a lot of obstructions like the Staff Photographers as well as the Speaker Stands which is why I was taking several shots of each launch using high-speed burst.

Since I just got the 20-105 f/4L IS one thing I didn't think of is if keeping the IS on the may have made things a little more difficult since it doesn't have mode 2?

Great shots!! I know ths shadows can give you a hard time with the sun setting behind the stands but look at the flames. These are bad boys!!!I had tickets and an RV spot reserved in Baytown, Texas at Houton Raceway Park for the Spring Nationals this year and my job slide the beenie weenie to me. I have been going every year for about the last 17 years. Here is one of my favorite pics from last year. I was shooting with a Canon 20D and Sigma 70-200 on a mono pod up in the stands. Shutter 1/160, ISO 200, F 11.0, FL 88mm. I had my printer in my rv and printed a 13x19 of this shot and got Ron Capps and Tony Petrogon to autograph it. That was to cool!!
