Girls Varsity Softball...

Here's a series from a play yesterday. The batter hit the ball back to the pitcher. She fielded the ball, turned and threw to first. These are three out of four in the series.

40D, Sigma 120-300 @ f/2.8

I like all three because of the shallow depth of field. Got a different view in each picture.

Well generally pitchers wear them after having injuries such as noses broken, jaw, etc..I understand it, that pitcher is like 35 to 40ft from the batter. I wouldnt want to be standing there.

Yes, but haven't gone through them yet. There were two games, JV and then Varsity.

Tim, I like it a lot. I've taken over 14K shots since I got it right before Christmas.

If you search this forum for MT Stringer, most of the pics were taken with it. Exceptions would be the Little League stuff.

TOMD, that's a balloon. It was Senior night and folks had ballons tied all over the place.

High school pitchers are 40 feet

ASA and college pitchers are 43 feet

I recently saw a team where the whole infield wore them and the third baseman had on soccer shin guards.

I guess I am just old school. We were taught as kids to not fear a ball. I would contend wearing that mask actually increases your chance of being hit by a ball or making an error because it blocks at least 15% of your field of view.

For protection from a previous injury I fully understand. I used to play a lot of super class softball with guys hitting 400+ foot slow pitch softball homeruns. Once saw a pitcher get hit in the face with a line drive that broke both his upper and lower jaw and knocked out every tooth from one side of his mouth. It happens and is not pretty.

However, to wear a mask because you are scared of the ball hitting you should be a sign that you should not be on the field in the first place.

I disagree. Some pitchers have a follow through that leaves them rather off balance and not in proper position for fielding.

See I disagree with that as justification. If they have a follow through that leaves them off balance and not in defensive position then they have been poorly coached as these are both key aspects of being a pitcher.

The kid should never have been allowed to learn how to not pitch correctly. They are just asking to get hurt or make errors which will cost their team.

True. It's too bad early on many kids are not show the correct mechanics.

I agree. I feel very fortunate that when I was growing up we had some outstanding coaches teach us how to play correctly. I never really appreciated all the drills and constant correcting when I was young but see now why they did it. Several of us that grew up in this program now are the one's who are coaching and we recently had a talk about all we learned when we were kids and how we want to try and pass this on to this generation.

Too bad we spend most of our time dealing with all the political crap of youth sports and the never ending stream of crying and excuses from the parents about why their kid should play and not have to follow the rules or do what they are told.
