Hi all

I am going on a photography tour to Provence in France in June :D(http://www.europaphotogenica.com/SummerInProvence.htm (external link)) and I am trying to work out my digital data needs in terms of quantity so that I can decide how many CF cards to take and what my Portable Disk requirements will be.

I will be in Provence for 10 days and then in Paris for 7 days. I have a5D and will be taking a 17-40L, 24-105L, 135L f/2, 50 1.8 (mk1) and a bunch of other minor extras (cards, 1.4 extender to go with the 135mm, PSU, etc)

If you have been on a photographer led tour, how many frames did you average per day?

Or even if it wasn't photgrapher led, how many would you take per day on a photography holiday?

Never been on a photographer led tour, but on a full day of shooting, I'd say I average about 300-400 shots. I fill 4GB worth of CF cards usually on a day of shooting.

I've never done an extended trip but I have done a couple of two day seminars and at both, the PIC (photographer in charge) was adament about getting people to avoid "Spray and Pray."

See It, Frame It, Think About It, Shoot It... If you can't get it in two or three exposures, something is wrong. Maybe it's the angle, the light, the choice of lens, etc...

"Less Is More" was the mantra and the emphasis was on getting "the keeper" in as few frames as possible.

I went on a one-day tour and took over a thousand, so perhaps times that by 17?

I completely agree. Spray and pray is not the answer. But a whole day of shooting lends a lot of opportunities to practice, so having more CF space is better than less.

Agreed. The duration of the OPs trip alone will generate a goodly number of images for sure!

Sounds like a great trip.

i tend to take a lot of pictures. i'd count on 500 shots a day ... or for me about 8 gigs a day.

i'm pretty sure that's a high estimate :D.

i'm going to africa in july and there will be about 10 days of shooting. i'm taking four 8-gig cards and a 4-gig card as well as an epson p3000 with a 120-gig hard drive.

Save on cards, just but a Storage Device and shoot safe in the knowledge that you won't run out.
I have a Nextodi (external link)which is fabulous! Downloads 1GB in an average of 50 seconds.

not on an epic trip where buying more cards might prove difficult if not impossible :D.

and if your storage unit fails?

you can always sell what you don't need later.

Thanks for the replies.
I suppose the answer seems to be "it depends"

I'm a bit of a deliberate photographer (suppose it's my film days!) so I use a tripod a lot and don't "spray and pray"

My guess before I saw the replies was that I expected to take about 100 - 200 per day so I am a bit surprised by some of the replies.

I will have to do a tour like test run somewhere close to home to see how I go.

Anyway thanks for your thoughts

Rob

Are you going to shoot Raw or Jpeg? That will depend on how much flexibility you will hvae with your cards. If you are going to be gone 17 days, I would take a stack of CD/DVD's with you & a card reader, and find some internet cafe's and burn your memory cards to disc, so you have a redundent backup besides a portable storage device.

But by having the Disc media, you eliminate the need to keep the images on the cards. However, that will depend on if you choose to shoot Raw or Jpeg. If you shoot Raw on the 5D, you are only going to get approx 500 images to the 8GB cards. So if you shoot conservatively, you are talking about an 8GB card lasting about 2 days.

Enjoy the trip.

Hi Rob, sounds like you should have a fun trip and really enjoy yourself. I haven't gone on one of those, but I do a lot of urban shooting and like to capture new places when I visit.

I also have a 5D and some of the gear in your sig. My cards are only 2GB though, but I buy them on sale and they get me through my wedding work shooting RAW at the rate of about 150 images per card. For the trip though I'd buy 4 or 8GB cards - they are very small, lightweight and take up little room. I don't own a storage unit, and would not be inclined to get one. To me that's just more gear to get in the way, and to possibly fail.

Now I will take a different approach here: I don't think you need to take everything on your list?

You will likely take 85%+ of your shots with the 24-105L. That is a fantastic walkaround lens and I've done most of my urban and wedding work with it. Take that. I don't see any point in taking the 50 1.8. There's an overlap there and it gains you little.

The 17-40 is an excellent light weight lens and will give you great UWA shots, and back up half of the 24-105 in the event of failure which I doubt. But at the same time it's not critical to take it unless you don't mind the extra gear. The 1.4 extender is good and so is the 135.

I'm NOT a fan of spray and pray, especially since you can always check your work. Remember, your brain and eyes are the most critical parts of your kit. Look, think, compose, shoot. Don't clutter your cards with stuff you will just delete later. You want to concentrate on the good stuff.

That being said, you can easily shoot 200-300 images/day. Do the math and figure out which cards you want to buy or already have. Have fun :D. - Stu
