So I'm covering a fashion show tommorrow night which takes place at a local night club, which I'm doing for free. I've never been to this type of fashion show but I can only assume it will be somewhat dark as all night clubs usually are, seeing that it's held during club hours.

My questions is will I be ok with the Canon 17-55 2.8IS and 430ex standing near the runway shooting the models and a walk around lens to take candid shots? Any other lens that you've had good experience with? And from following the "Club Pictures" thread, I should be shooting at 1/3 f3.5 ISO 400, is that safe to say? When I get there, I'll do some test shots first obviously but I just wanted a safe setting to start out with first. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

1/3 without practice can result in blurred pictures.

I would recommend my basic settings which are great when learning or new to slower sutter speeds.

f/2.8 with shutter speed at 1/60 (you may be able to get away with 1/50) and set the ISO from 400-1600. Let the flash be used to fill if there is not enough light.

Those I would consider safe since you can apply some NR in processing. Just get there early and see if you can fire a few rounds and adjust accordingly. I wouldnt really shooter anything higher than f4 since the flash will have to start working harder and flush out colours.

0.3s could be fine if you have steady hand as you have IS. However, your subjects are not static so that may be a problem.

Your best bet would be to show up for rehearsal and see what works.

Thanks guys. I really appreciate it. In a forum full of lurkers, you both pull through in helping someone out. I'll try those setting and if I get anything special I'll share it in the Club Picture thread.

Thanks.

f4 -f5 all night, 1/10- 1"3 on many of them, IS0 400. I tried 800 as someone suggested first but didnt notice much difference when I bumped it to 400 so I just stayed that way all night.

I couldnt have done it without you guys though, so some of the credits go to you guys.

BTW, I knew I should have brought my fisheye with me but dame it....I managed to get about 14ft high and the fisheye would have caught a pretty nice overhead shot of the crowd. But I didnt want to carry anything else on me. The XTi/430ex/Grip/17-55f2.8IS felt about 20lbs by the time I lefted the club. :)
