While I wait for my FTP upload...

To make you all feel better

It actually appears to back focus (by about 2mm at 2km)

It is heavier with the battery installed (but seems still lighter then the 10D with Big Ed)

I was going to send a full res, min compression, large jpeg, but my dial-up line couldn't handle it (okay so maybe this is not necessarily a negative)

No more 16bit Tif saves for me (96MB for one image)

As soon as the FTP is done I will have
- one full size jpeg at PS 8 compression no enhancements saved from RAW from TIF16bit.
- one med-size original out of the camera jpeg
- and one 100% crop at PS 10 res with some sharpening.

No critiques on lighting, exposure or color balance. I am only on page 10 of the 100+ page manual. And all of the buttons are in different places.

one other negative, I am not sure yet that I like how much effort it takes to change settings, some require two fingers on one hand and grip and finger on the other, instead of 1 hand does most with the occasional single finger on the other hand. Also reviewing images is a pain compared to my 10D. On the flip side, after I start shooting I don't change many buttons.

I had to ACTUALLY READ the manual to figure out how to get it to work.

images should be up in my next post.

***warning scantily clad art work ****

Okay this is technically the 35 and 59th pictures I took but close enough

link to 100% crop jpeg saved at PS 10 (it is a small 683KB)

link to full size jpeg after RAW to TIF to JPEG otherwise straight from camera (almost forgot this one is 1meg)

and finally one for us dialup folks reduced to 800x533 (a measly 130KB)

I thought I had a picture of me with it in my hand, but apparently I forgot to move it from my poor forgotten 10D

Next post:

Well, I did a set of tests, shooting bursts.

If I shoot 5 or 6 images and just wait, they seem to be written to the card ok.

If I press "Display" to look at the images *after* the burst, the screen brings up junk, and the camera hangs on write, and needs to be reset by taking out the battery. The files seem lost; from the point in the buffer writing process where display is pressed. In my opinion as a customer, a camera that hangs while reviewing is not to spec, and I am returning it tomorrow to the dealer. I will request a new unit rather than a repair. It's a pity because this unit was sweet.

Just tried this, I got worried for a second because it did seem that the write
function hung up, but after pressing display a couple more times it finished, so it may or may not be a problem. I sort of like that it displayed the image before it had finished writing all of the ones I just took.

....And after looking at the back for a moment, I had my slow Sandisk card in and was shooting RAW + L instead of RAW + M2 like I had been for most of the first 80-100 images.

However, mine seems to work fine so far

One other negative, this shutter is LOUD, no sneaking around taking pictures from hide. At least my models will know I am taking a picture now.
Speaking of models, I need to go offline to free up my phone so hopefully my model tomorrow will call and confirm she is showing up.

Too bad my 1DsMkII only impresses other photographers :) 8) :)

Hmmm. Seems there's something there, but I'm sure a simple firmware fix will clean that up.

As for the shutter being loud: Welcome to 1-series land. You have a quarter-million actuation shutter there, so it will be a bit noisier than the pro-sumer cams. However, there is a hush feature...

Tim:
I don't necessarily expect you to remember, but if you do, is the shutter as loud or louder than my 1D Mk II?

If the mirror is roughly the same size as the sensor, I might think mirror slap might be a bit more pronounced.

I'm not short. I'm concentrated awesome!
