Buck up 'ol timer. People still laugh when I tell them about buying packages of single use 'flash bulbs'.

We had to turn the camera sideways to get an 'up-and-down' shot, as opposed to the regular 'side-to-side shot'.

A 40D, a 30D, some nice glass and a great Shooting Partner.

I never had this problem with my 6 x 6

let's just use side-to-side and up-and-down from now on

Actual technical specifications and definitions are irrelevant, given that the subject at hand is imperfect terminology, and completely misses the mark.

Unless, of course, my example was too good to dispute. ;)

I liked your example

We all know that digital photographers have to contend with noise and film photographers contend with grain. So what happens if a person mixes up the terms? Imagine that a digital photographer that has never worked with film before sees grain in a film print. If he's totally unfamiliar with film then he might describe the grain as "noise" since he only knows digital terms. His choice of term would show that he doesn't know anything about film. He might know a lot about digital but obviously doesn't know much about film. That example is exactly what it's like for me when I hear the terms landscape/portrait....I know that it's coming from photography knowledge that is limited to a hobbyist or semi-pro weekend warrior type of experience. The person might know a lot about hobbyist or pro-sumer type of photography but probably nothing about commercial photography. Not sure if that's where you were going with that example but that's how I interpreted it

-When people think it's funny to take your camera or put their hands over the lens while you trying to shoot.
-People at school jumping in front of you while your trying to get a shot.
-My complete and total lack of understanding photoshop.
-People who whine about a P&S and then I take it and they say "how did you get the camera to do that".
-When P&S are allowed into an event but my camera isn't.
-Beautiful people who I've taken great pictures of but they whine that they look horrible in them.
-People who think having a camera gives them the right to be unethical and rude.
-People who think they're professionals because they have thousands of doallers worth of equipment.
-People who can afford Mac's, jk jk.
-This one's just more funny than irritating, when people try to light up the moon with their flash.
-Photographers who don't have confidence in their work, I'm still guilty of this sometimes.
-The term "photo", I have no clue as to why.
-People trying to take a photograph inside w/o a flash and wondering why the pictures come out yellow and blurry.
-Try to take group shots for your school yearbook and people give the finger or throw gang signs.
-People who spell Canon Cannon.

Well, I didn't know I had that many pet peeves. Talk about great therapy. This is a pretty good list for a 16 year old, LOL.

Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi [D-SLR];Canon EOS 650 [35mm]
Canon 18-55mm macro;Tamron 28-80mm;Nifty Fifty
Canon Speelite 420EZ
Canon EOS 50D

These are terms that hobbyists and semi-pro weekend warriors use... so they are only the industry standard when talking to those type of people. It's definitely not the industry standard in commercial photography. Now, it is true that these terms are becoming more acceptable. But it's also true that they were popularized mostly from trying to teach basic concepts to P&S type camera users. OK, turn your camera this way to take a picture of Aunt Sarah and turn your camera this way to take a picture of sunset at the beach. The reason that it's a pet peeve of mine is because it can be a quick way to separate those that take pictures for fun from those that take pictures for a living. It can be a quick way to differentiate those that learned photography from an instruction manual that came with an automatic camera as opposed to those that studied formally or worked on commercial sets. The thought of trying to orient a 4x5 back into anything other than horizontal or vertical just makes me wince... Sorry if that bothers some people but it really is my #1 pet peeve. What good is a pet peeve thread without honesty? :D

My biggest pet peeve is photographers who have such an overinflated ego that they simply can't get over themselves.

People with P&S cameras who will hold it a foot in front of them looking through the back to take a picture and then wonder why their pictures are not coming out sharp.

 Have you ever tried to use one of those P&S cameras? The viewfinder either literally doesn't exist, or is so tiny as to be rendered useless. I have to hold it up like that if I have one, and I know how I look using it, too.

My pet peeves:
- Models or MUA that come unprepaired for a days shoot. Those who arrive late for said shoots! Assistants included(fired two for that) who arrive late!
-The big GREEN square on all the High end cameras, or P. WHY?
-Professionals that tell you that all you need is the big GREEN SQUARE!
-Models that think they know more than you, ala their BF is a photog!
-Customers who want you to hand over your RAW files etc without editing!
-Having to buy plug-ins for PS! Put out the recipe and let us learn it!
-Manufacturers that all have their versions of RAW! Unify people, one standard!!!
-Photogs who say one brand is better than another! I can shoot any brand equally well!
It is the photographer not the equipment!

...when someone says "landscape" and "portrait" instead of "horizontal" and "vertical

How about all the people on YouTube that take vertical videos with their P&S cameras that then end up sideways when viewed?

that sh*& makes me wince :D

Thanks for sharing my pet peeve....newbies to the photo world that decide their experience and knowledge outstrips the collective history of rest of us. The terms landscape and portrait have been industry standards for nearly as many years as there have been rectangular format cameras that adapted themselves to easy rotation. While you might personally dislike the terms, their use does not separate the "pros" from the hoi polloi. Clowns with attitudes like yours make me wince.

- 'Crop' factors, especially when expressed as the 'real' focal length

- Format snobbery

- Parroted information taken as fact

- Pretending MP's don't matter at all

So I was out taking some horizontals the other day and was having a grand day of it when this Yeti jumped out from the bushes and I quickly got a few verticals of her. They would have been published too had not that other guy not gotten great bokeh on his verticals of the space aliens.

I wanted to practise the new vocabulary I learnt today with you folks so I too could look like a pro. Did I use the words in the proper fashion?

Oh and remember children erase those tripod marks.
