Tiffany, thank you for that. I needed a good laugh.

My biggest pet peeve is when someone is a "professional wedding photographer" who only has an XT that breaks a day before the wedding and has the brass tacks to call and ask if she could borrow my cameras. The worst part is that I have absolutely no clue who she is. I work with her cousin who gave her my number and told her to call. I was PI$$ED! Needless to say we had a "come to Jesus" meeting the next night I worked with her.

Oh, btw, she just didn't show up at the wedding. No phone call or anything. What a jerk.

Get a grip troll boy. Your juvenile behavior is best reserved for the playground.

This thread is about pet peeves...I stated mine..Why do you have such a problem with it?

40,000+ posts and all you can come up with is to call me a troll and a juvenile? That's pretty sad

If you don't agree...hey that's fine....you're entitled to your own opinion...But I'm entitled to mine as well

So I was out taking some horizontals the other day and was having a grand day of it when this Yeti jumped out from the bushes and I quickly got a few verticals of her. They would have been published too had not that other guy not gotten great bokeh on his verticals of the space aliens.

I wanted to practise the new vocabulary I learnt today with you folks so I too could look like a pro. Did I use the words in the proper fashion?

Oh and remember children erase those tripod marks.

wow, tough crowd around here

Who would have known that a simple post about horizontal/vertical would take so many people out of their comfort zones?

LOL it is getting a little out of shape (I wont say what shape for fear of starting the whole thing off)

In an attempt to pour oil on troubled waters, I will say that anyone is entitled to any pet peeve regardless of how rational or irrational it is. The problems occur when the person expressing that pet peeve goes on to point out that anyone (or should that be everyone) who used said peeve is either an amateur or semi pro weekend warrior and knows nothing about professional photography.

GV I am sure you are a great guy and an excellent photographer (I could not find any pictures here though ;-)a ) But come on, you must have known you would get a reaction to that.

I think part of the problem is that Portrait and Landscape are more commonly used to describe a scene and the confusion can arise when someone thinks that one must use that particular orientation of a rectangular format to capture that type of picture. When in fact the use of the term Portrait or Landscape is in no way connected to the content of the image it is simply an almost universally accepted term used to describe orientation.

I personally am a bit peeved when people refer to their camera as "Gripped" (I always want to as "By whom" I also don't particularly like the term "Pulled the trigger" or describing ones camera gear (gears is another one) as their "Arsenal" my biggest pet peeve is the overuse of the work "Awesome" it is a great word but its use to describe something that is at best good devalues it.

But these are only my pet peeves, and whilst I may dislike them I make no value judgement on the people who use them, I feel in no way superior either intellectually, morally or professionally to those that do, and understand that if there is a problem it is mine and not theirs.

If you don't agree...hey that's fine....you're entitled to your own opinion...But I'm entitled to mine as well

You are certainly entitled to have an opinion, you are under no obligation to use the terms portrait and landscape and nobody can tell you that you are required to like their use. The problem lies in the manner of expressing your "opinion" as an absolute fact, when actually it was more of a childish assertion that anyone that chooses to use those terms is nothing short of a rank amateur or an illiterate imbecile. Contrary to your opinion, the use of those terms is not a component of the definition of either an amateur photographer or an imbecile. Your phrasing of your "opinion" was carefully crafted to draw a heated response from people and that is indeed the very definition of troll posting.

The bottom line....when you present opinion as fact, expect to get called out on it.

These are terms that hobbyists and semi-pro weekend warriors use... so they are only the industry standard when talking to those type of people. It's definitely not the industry standard in commercial photography. Now, it is true that these terms are becoming more acceptable. But it's also true that they were popularized mostly from trying to teach basic concepts to P&S type camera users. OK, turn your camera this way to take a picture of Aunt Sarah and turn your camera this way to take a picture of sunset at the beach. The reason that it's a pet peeve of mine is because it can be a quick way to separate those that take pictures for fun from those that take pictures for a living. It can be a quick way to differentiate those that learned photography from an instruction manual that came with an automatic camera as opposed to those that studied formally or worked on commercial sets. The thought of trying to orient a 4x5 back into anything other than horizontal or vertical just makes me wince... Sorry if that bothers some people but it really is my #1 pet peeve. What good is a pet peeve thread without honesty?

This whole conversation started when you challenged my first post in regards to industry standards. So I responded that industry standards vary depending on the market. The industry standard terms used by hobbyists and semi-pros are often different than the standard terms used by commercial photographers and those with more formal photo education backgrounds.

If a person challenges my post, then it's perfectly acceptable for me to respond. Isn't that how forums are supposed to work? If the response bothers some people then maybe that says more about them than me....What am I supposed to do?...lie?

Gee, when expressing your opinion is simply hurling insults, and you expect those who disagree with that opinion not to feel offended? It's all in the delivery.

For the record, I'm a rank amateur with way more gear than talent. But I have no aspirations to be a "pro", I just want to take pretty pictures. I'm a professional at other things.

So do I and most times, it's much more rewarding, not to mention fun, than buying new gear.

you said that....not me

OK...since you supposedly called me out...How about I call you out? Fair is fair...right?

You've been using "rank amateur" (your words) terms for vertical/horizontal for many years and weren't aware until I came along and pointed it out.... The problem is...you really want to be respected by commercial photographers instead of just surfers newbs... so you'd like to use the more respected terms....the problem is that you'd have to admit you were sounding like a "rank amateur" (your words) for all those years in order to change

So what are you gonna do? Continue to talk like a rank amateur (your words) ....or change and concede that I'm right

My bet is that you'll continue to talk like a "rank amateur" (your words)...but it'll bother you....and eventually you'll change terms when you think I'm not around to notice muhahahahaha

I am not pretending anything :D

I was telling a joke ;-)a

Flippers for Fins & Goggles for Mask are I guess, the scuba equivalent of the debate that was going on here.

So lighten up my friend before a pet peeve becomes the cause of a coronary.

And just to put a full stop to the whole affair.

You are right, everyone who has a contrary view is wrong. You are a God! and we all love you.

Do I have any pet peeves? Is this question related to photography or photography forums?

Well, either way I could say one would be when people resort to accusations (or name calling) while another would be senseless arguments in a vain attempt to prove oneself as being either more correct or more intelligent than the other.

Hmmm....I think we need to have a little quiz to answer the age old question....are you a pro...

1: What do you use to refer to camera orientation.
a. horizontal and vertical
b. portrait and landscape

2. What mode to you use to shoot:
a. RAW and all manual all the time
b. whatever mode the situation best calls for

3. What is your view on post processing?
a. I never do it. I get it right in camera.
b. I do whatever I feel gets me the image I had in mind.

4. what is your view on skin smoothing?
a. If the skin looks like wax, I've done my job.
b. I prefer a light touch that looks natural and shows the beauty of skin

5. what is in your gear bag?
a. Ls and 1D bodies only
b. the best gear for my shooting style

6. when you see a photo you comment on:
a. sharpness, clarity, noise, CA
b. composition and the overall feeling you get from the photo

7. when you go to the playground with your kids you
a. take your entire gear bag and two bodies just to be safe
b. are satisfied with a point and shoot...nothing wrong with snapshots

8. When the newest camera model comes out you
a. pre-order it immediately: only the newest for you
b. carefully consider the benefits of upgrading based on your shooting style and budget

9. When someone sees you out shooting and asks if they can have a copy of one of your shots you:
a. offer them a copy of the file, low resolution, watermarked, and for $1000 just to use on their desktop at work
b. feel flattered and share a web resolution file freely

10. When on photography forums you:
a. continue to beat a dead horse because people disagree with you and dang it, you're always right and your word is law and any one who disagrees is beneath you and an idiot
b. look at pictures, get inspired, and get out and shoot!

If you answered mostly A....congrats you are a PRO!!!

If you answered mostly B....sorry loser, give it up and turn your gear in, you're nothing but a hack
