How do you guys clean the mirror that reflects the image to the view finder? As far as I know, it's just a standard mirror, no coating or anything.

Not quite true Kevin. The silvered coating is on the front rather than the back which makes it quite easy to scratch. It's not impossible to clean but go VERY carefully! Most people would advise leaving well alone.

cheers

There is another thread discussing this exact same thing. Check out:
https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=487492

Basically some people are comfortable cleaning it the same way as you do your sensor but apply less pressure, and others believe it will shatter and crumble to dust if looked at, and then there are those everywhere in between.

I just clean mine like I do my sensor and it's worked for me.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

hm ... there's a silvered coating on it? Anyways, the other night I saw some finger prints on it and I just wiped it off w/ a lens pen. It looks perfect now, under all lighting angles and I can't see any more spots in the view finder. Had no idea that it was that delicate.

Hey... don't knock it :D it looks like you got away with it!
A lot of these things are hyped up out of all proportion, but you do have to be careful sometimes. The trouble is, that when it does go wrong it can be quite expensive to repair.

Glad it worked out ok!

cheers

lol :D
Either way, the mirror surface is now perfect. I didn't use any chemicals, just a lens pen (which actually left some swirl marks (from the original finger print). I ended up using a lens cloth and just wiped it down lightly.
