Is the Sigma lens a 2.8 all the way out to 300 mm? Yes! The great thing about the Sigma lens is it is 120-300 zoom with a 2.8 across all. With football I love the fact I can be at 300mm and as the action comes closer to me i can just zoom out and keep shooting. If you only had the prime you would be stuck with only getting close ups. It will feel so much better in your hands, esp if you use a longer lens. (Better balanced), and trust me, the 3.5 FPS of the XSi will be far too slow. You'll LOVE the 6.5 FPS of the 40D. (As you get more into sports photography that may even seem too "slow".) Photographers do it in 1/1,000th of a second...but the memory lasts forever!
