I just bought a new 40D. I stuck in a CF card that I had been using on my 30D. I shot one frame and then noticed that the card was nearly full.

Initially, I couldn't remember how to Format the card. So I deleted all the images on the card. Then I figured out how to Format the card and did that.

When I started shooting again, I noticed that the images were numbered in the 4000 range.

My question is: Shouldn't a new camera start at image #1 and work it's way up? Is my new camera not so new (been used before)?

The image number was carried from your 30D to your 40D by the card.

Sorta like an infection. As the nurse at the clinic said, "You've gotta be more careful where you put that thing".

Seriously: you can reset the image number. It's a menu function.

it used the numbers off the 30D - you can reset the 40D to zero now, but make sure the cards you stick into it get formatted inthe camera before you take a shot.

congrats on the cam.

Agreed, the count was from the prior usage of the camera. Happened to me too. You can reset the card count and start over with the new camera.

The very reason I always format any media cards via the computer so the previous cameras file directory is wiped clean. Formatting in the camera won't do this.

This is if your upgrading bodies and using existing media. Normal use its done in camera.
