Recently purchased a 24L from B&H and decided to see how it performed with available light. I knew it would be fast and hand-holdable @ f/1.4, iso 1600 but also wanted to see how it handled itself @ f/22, iso 100 with a 30 second exposure.

I was not disappointed! ;)

Cheers! :)

It did well. And so did you.:D

Comment: with a 24 mm FL @ f/4 focused at about 10 metres, the calculated DOF would be from 2.54 metres to infinity, easily enough to capture the same detail.

This would save you five stops (from f/22 to f/4). Bumping the ISO to 400 (easily achieved with your camera), would gain two more. Seven stops on the shutter speed would result in a 1/4 second exposure which may be advantageous in terms of noise (although with a 5D, noise is rarely a major issue).

According to photozone, the resolution of this lens is amazing even at f/2, allowing an even quicker shutter speed. I can hardly believe the IQ from this lens.

Let's see some more stuff from this combination.

Very nicely done. I am impressed with the lens. Did a great job of bringing out the green of the grass in the area in the lower right quadrant.

Thanks for your kind feedback on the shot!

I have predominantly been experimenting with this lens more so at at the f/1.4 end so far and find the review results from your link pretty much spot on for the 24L. It is indeed a bit soft on the edges wide open but the ability to grab a low light handheld shot more then make up for this short-coming.

This shot below, was taken at f/1.4, hand held, with the last drops of day light after the sun went down.

Cheers! :)

It's hard to imagine what it's like to have an f/1.4 lens - two whole stops faster than f/2.8. I hand hold my f/2.8 17/55 indoors without flash and get reasonable results - f/1.4 would stop action.:D

Add to that the good DOF with this focal length, and it's making me wonder . . . . . hmmm . . . .what do they cost?:D

No, I can barely haul around the gear I have - going to have to put up with my slower lenses.

Have fun with the lens.
