I just got the genesis 400 kit from calumet and recently learned that my sigma 530 super flash has an optical sensor so it can be used as a slave. I thought to myself how cool. so i consulted my manual and can't quite figure it out.

I know this isn't the most widely used flash so there may not be very many people to help me but any help is better than no help at all.

basically what is happening is I get to the slave screen and a red light begins blinking on the front of the flash. the manual tells me to press the "sel" button several times to get it to stop. Well i can't get it to stop.

this is were i'm at now.

thanks

hi steve..

i'm not sure i understand your question

you want your sigma to be optical slave to your genesis lights?

Firstly this seems kinda not normal.. usually the sigma should fire off the genesis... meaning , genesis is the optical slaves while the sigma is the master trigger...
----

anyway, to put the sigma to optical slave mode, you need to be in that mode.
i assume you have the 530 DG Super? or 530 DG ST? eitherway, same deal...
on the 530 Super manual, its in page 24.

also http://www.flashzebra.com …gmamanualmode/index.shtml (external link)

once youre in manual slave mode, you will see the red light blink.

the SEL is used at this point to change output power. 1/1 1/2 1/4 1/8 etc.

now, you need a way to trigger the genesis so as to get the slave sigma to fire. the sigma slave will fire anytime it sees another flash fire. note that during this mode, the red light will constantly "blink"

I use my Sigma Super in optical slave mode quite a bit, for background or hair light.

The red AF assist light will always blink when it's in slave mode. Since the auto power off is disabled, this reminds you that it's turned on.

I got it to work! I was in the wrong mode. i think i was trying to set the master when i needed to set the slave.... well regardless it works now and frankly works very well

now i just need some gels to light my white background

OR

should i buy a light stand and soft box and do the diy speed ring?

OR

both!

Wicked link to instructions -- I am planning on using my sigma off camera and this will help a lot!
