iPod recommendations for storing photos?

My MIL is looking for an iPod to store photos from her P&S. (To play music, too) I am not up on current models and options at all as far as iPod-type stuff goes and have no idea what's even available, so some ideas or recommendations would be most appreciated.

She is ok with not going with the cheapest, though she is on something of a budget. If I were buying this for me I would want a screen or display of some kind so that I could "see" that the photos made the transition ok, and I would like to recommend the same for her.

Does she need to be able to view the photos from it or just store them like a portable hard drive? I use my old 40GB 4th Gen(?) iPod for storage since when I listen to music anything larger than the shuffle gets in the way.

Although I have no firsthand experience, everything I've read says that the ipod isn't really geared towards being a portable storage device for photos. It's fine if you already have the photos on the computer, and just want to upload them to the ipod for storage or viewing, but not very good if you want to direct connect between camera and ipod.

most any ipod can be used as a disk drive, in itunes you just click the box "enable disc usage" As of right now the only ones that can't be used in this manner with itunes are the ipod touch models.

If you're transferring from CAMERA--PC--IPOD then transfer speeds should be alright, however I've heard the dedicated CAMERA--IPOD wire is pathetically slow when dealing with decent sized images and absolutely kills the battery on the iPods.

I could be wrong as this is based on what I read a year ago when considering the option as a photobank. If I am wrong let us know.

my ipod touch has a WIFI, could I hook it up with camera system somehow?

I have it Jailbreaken, so folks might be able to come up with some software that would handle transfers between devices!
