The mother rejected the cubs shortly after birth...just walked away. The keepers had to take over. Didn't happen with the last set of cubs about 4 or 5 years ago but for some reason Oshana didn't want to be a mom this time around I guess. They are very cute.

Hi Zoo Photogs,
I started this thread some years back and the journey has been most rewarding - for helping me learn about animal needs and behaviour.

It also helped me to open my eyes to appreciate the quality of life for many of the Zoo inhabitants. Not all Zoos are equal and the key goal should be the preservation of the animals for the good of all. I am so very glad that all the images shared here has reflected such positive treatment of animals in enclosures but I recently came upon serious mistreatment of animals at a Zoo. I realise that this post may be deleted by the moderators but if it is within the realm of sharing relevant information that furthers the interest of specific group of photographers, I hope some here would consider signing the petition to close this Zoo in Surabaya. Moderators, if this is out of bounds, please proceed to delete this post. Otherwise, I hope that those who have the fortune of enjoying good zoos can help the animals in places where they live in terrible conditions.

Beautiful photos and it is nice to see you back here.

And Yes I have read about the Surabaya zoo horror myself too and I even signed a petition, because what is going on there is beyond words..
Hope to have some energy this week to go to the zoo again myself but in the meantime...

Thanks very much Sandra. Very kind of you.

I do lurk on this thread appreciating the work of others. I wish I had more time to dedicate to the photography of animals for a longer period of time. Even at the zoo just to record their behaviour.

The state of the Surabaya Zoo is appalling and a disgrace that needs to be shown to the world so that the authorities will be forced to deal with it instead of ignoring it and leaving it to the regional governments. The state of wildlife is already so bad in the wild but there is absolutely no excuse for any Zoo to be treating its animals in such a bad way. Rather it close down than to cause suffering. Goes completely against the fundamental purpose of having a Zoo - and educational service and a refuge for endangered animals.

Anyway, I thought your capture of the sweet face Secretary Bird is great. It belies the sheer power and strength of the bird - that catches and kills snakes for lunch! The long eyelashes gives it a sweet dainty look I think.
