These are the most noisy photos I have ever seen from a 5D2.
Were they heavily under exposed before post-processing?

Actually they were taken close to sunset and I used Auto ISO mode. I checked and they were all running at over 1000. I also shoot with all the noise removal functions off.

Where did you take the monitor pictures? Do you live in the range of the Malayan Water Monitor, or do you think it was someone's pet they let go?

I wrote to the local Zoo today and they replied that these are in fact Malayan Monitor Lizards. Apparently not dangerous to man. I shot it in one of the remote corners of the Singapore Botanical Gardens.

I wondered if you were in Singapore (I looked at your blog). That's really cool that you got to see one then! I'm happy to hear you are in their range & it wasn't someone's pet. I hate hearing when people release things like that in the wild. (I used to have a Savannah Monitor. They don't get as big & tend to be more docile. Anyway, I love reptiles & unfortunately lots of people buy large snakes & lizards as babies & then turn them loose when they get too big. I'm glad to hear that wasn't the case this time!)

Unless the EXIF is wrong, two of the photos I quoted are at ISO 250 and 1000.
Are these JPGs right out of the camera?

I just checked the exif again. Yes you are correct that its 250 and 1000 iso. Yes, I shoot RAW and JPG but I used the JPG in this case. I also cropped it down and now I realise the noise is more evident in the cropped version.

I am now perturbed why they are so noisy. Any idea?
You think its because it was under exposed?

I believe its illegal here in Singapore to have such animals as pets but unfortunately it does not stop some people (e.g. keeping pythons, endangered turtles etc). Honestly, I have no idea if this reptile had always been at the gardens all its life.

The Botanic Gardens (modelled on Kew Gardens London) is a refuge for a lot of local animal life. Kingfishers and migratory birds live there free from predators. Lots of freshwater fish, turtles, insects and such which makes it an ecosystem on its own. http://www.sbg.org.sg/ (external link)

I haven't shot JPG for really long time. I was originally thinking the picture was underexposed in RAW, and then you lighten it up in PP which also brought up some noise.

It is highly possible they are due to heavy crop with noise reduction off on shooting JPGs. Compare more "out-of-camera" samples with NR off with other full frame folks. :)

Not sure if I ever shared mine. I need to make a trip to the zoo again sometime soon.

Canonised, Can I ask a question? - back on page 8 you edited one of Coondogg's photos. How do you remove the white shadows from the cage lines in PS?
I'm going to the zoo tommorow and you have inspired me! Thanks for your great photos and the suggestions you have made.

Wonderful - hope you will enjoy a fruitful and rewarding time at your zoo. I just checked the photo again. I cannot recall precisely how but clearly, try to shoot with at least f2.8 and get as near as possible to the cage / grill. Essentially you are using the lens capability to blur out parts by narrowing the depth of field. The longer the length of the lens the more effective it is at a given f-stop.

In photoshop, you can use contrast control or better still the exposure/gamma controls to darken the image and raise the highlights. This trick does not work fro all cage shots though but often does. :-)

Do show us your first efforts. Once again - trust me - with practice you WILL get better.
