I am interested in taking portraits similar to those taken in the nineteenth century.
Mostly when you look at modern photos of people wearing antique costume, they look like moderns in antique costume. Which raises the question of why.
Some of the thoughts I have come up with are:
Modern costumes tend to be new, whereas in old photos they were well worn. In addition the sewing and weave may have been different.
Modern people are perhaps less weatherworn, and possibly more washed than their earlier counterparts.
The expressions in the older photos tend to be much more severe - I have read that this was because the exposure times were so long.
Does anyone have any insight into this, or any references that they would recommend?
Thanks
