All of the outdoor macro shot's (insects/flowers/dew drops) I've done so far have been using natural light shooting in AV mode, but the sun's not always working with me. So I got a Novoflex flash bracket to let me use my 430EX to assist with lighting.

My question now is what mode (AV, TV, M) do you use to shoot macro outdoors with a flash? Also what's a good aperture to use?

Anyone have macro examples using a flash with EXIF data they can share? Thanks in advance! :)

I use M at or below the sync speed with the flash on ETTL around f11/16.If you do a search for posts by 'Lord V, and Curtiss that should answer the question better than I can.

I use M, too.

Forum search links don't last long, so I don't post them.

If you do a "Advanced" forum KEYWORD search in "Search Titles Only" for Macro, you will find a lot of help.
Be sure and select the relevant area in the Search in Forum(s) fields

My macro setup is 20D in Manual mode, 100mm Canon macro, 420EX flash with Lightsphere II diffuser.

Settings are 160th (for hand holding), f11 (for adequate DOF) and about +2/3 stop flash exposure compensation.

The flash will (usually) adjust its output for proper exposure. The diffuser makes the flash a larger light source and extends the flash out near the end of the lens.

I'm full manual all the time with Macro. I usually start at about F11 and ISO400 and then adjust the shutter down as low as I can, balancing between camera shake and good exposure. A lot of the time I use a tripod so I can get to quite slow shutter speeds - see second example. If my shutter speed starts to get too low I then bump up the ISO.

Most, if not all of the time I want the flash to be fill so I use -ve FEC, usually about -1. My MR-14 RIng Flash is not diffused so -ve FEC helps a lot to prevent bright spots on shiny insects. If I use a 580 or 430 on a bracket it'll be diffused with a softbox.

Here are some recent examples of mine.
