Change to the newer 16-35mm lens?

I've read several postings here about the 16-35mm L lens. I currently have an older 17-35mm L lens that I use quite frequently (first on a film body and for the last few years on a 1.6 frame camera). Always have been happy with it.
But, I realize that it is discontinued and obviously improved (as happens with most older model lenses).
Is it time for me to dump the old and buy the new? What will I notice with the newer model? Significant increase in sharpness? Anything else? And, is there a demand anywhere for the 17-35mm if I decide to sell it?

Subtopic--I have a similar dilemma with my 75-300 IS zoom. Same age. However, the descriptions of the newer models of that lens don't sound as intriguing as the descriptions of the 16-35mm, so it's probably not as compelling. Besides, I use the wide angle lenses MUCH more.

A review of the two which summarises the benefits and differences very well -

WOW---thanks for the quick update.
Actually, I had seen that link before when I searched this topic in the forum. Quite interesting!
However, though I realize that link has some useful data, I'm wondering more in "practical" terms...

That review is the older 16-35 and not the newer 16-35 II. Just an FYI.

Thanks...I had noticed that, too.

With the disclaimer that I don't own the newer 16-35, I have played with it and it is currently #1 lens on my list for upgrade. I do own the older 16-35.

Significant reduction in flare was my biggest reason I want to upgrade. You almost have to deliberatly try to get flare - I like that.

It also seemed to have better edge quality, which while it is not going to make much difference on a 1.6x camera, will on a FF camera.

Those were good enough reasons for me, if not for my current tight budget and relatively how little I use the 16-35, I would have gotten the 16-35/f2.8L II by now.

Just my observations and opinions,
