I just want to post this to let you all know.
My friend bought a 40D on Amazon but through J&R music store. http://www.jr.com/ (external link)
When the 40d kit with 28-135mm IS lens arrived, it had no canon retail box, no cds, no manual, no warranty cards. 40D was in a white box, and lens in another white box.
J&R is so messed up!
Just want to let you all know about it.

Hm... I've always had great luck with J&R. Fast shipping, good products, well packed.

Did your friend call and talk to them? Maybe there was a mistake.

There lifetime on resellerratings is a 6.5, which while not great, isn't too terrible either. Maybe they've been slipping since I used them...

Anyways, sorry to hear about that.

Yeah, I don't know...I actually bought from them before. But that was long time ago. I was so disappointed that they did this to my friend. And my friend is very busy and he bought the camera so he can go on vacation this week with it. This is great trouble for him if he needs to call and find out what's going. But I probably should convince him to do so.

this sound like the last time i bought a laptop from circuit city, it comes with circuit city gray box, not the retail box ;) but the price was too good so i didn't have any compain, hehe

I've bought a few items from them before without any issues. Even got them to price match a sale price from another web retailer on SanDisk CF cards a while back.

Is he 100% positive that it did actually come from J&R?

The white boxes sound like your friend bought a refurb - or if he didn't actually order a refurb - he might have gotten one. Ask him to check the label on the outside oft he box.. Canon refurbs are clearly marked as such.

Sorry to hear of your issue. I got my 5D/24-105L from them through Amazon, and it went as smooth as a baby's butt - I even got it earlier than they said I would.

Have Fun,

Rick

my friend ordered brand new with kit lens, and price was on par with every other retailers.
I don't know why it happens this way. I have told him to call, and find out why.
I will update once I hear from him.

so my friend called today.. apparently, J&R said they can't do anything about it, but to mail ONLY the manual to my friend. NO warranty cards will be included... and I told my friend to call back again to demand the warranty cards and CDs. We will see how it goes tomorrow.
So messed up!

in january BH sold us two 1d mark IIIs. one was a blue dot and the other was in the suspect range with the old firmware.

recently adorama sold me a manfrotto ballhead that did not have a QR plate but did come with a gitzo box wrench.

i just thought i'd let you know that BH and adorama are fishy.

please beware :D!

If your friend isn't happy, just return the items. J&R have a really good return policy. Yes, he will be stuck paying for the shipping. They also price match and bargain.

With that said I never order from them. I only use J&R when I need something immediately and go directly to their store. I prefer Amazon prices and their return policy. I've purchased all my current cameras and lenses from Amazon. I even like to pay for the shipping (instead of free super saver shipping) just for piece of mind when it comes to camera/lenses.

I would still call J&R again and make clear the problem. I'm sure a mistake was made. If not then return the items.

Some kits like the 5D/24-205L did come in seperate white boxes but it doesn't explain the missing items and why they wern't in a single larger retail box.

My friend decided not to call at all now. He is too busy with work as a doc. I guess the story probably ends right now. He just hope the camera will last....

definately sounds like a refurb. I'm thinking of ordering from J&R and it sounds like they are mostly ok then? Has anyone bought non camera stuff from them?

Bought a few wireless routers and few sets of headphones from them over the years but those are just common boxed electronics.

My father bought one of the first HD DVR back when they first were introduced when only Sony made them. Bargained with them on price. He also bought a P&S, dropped it the first weekend, cracked zoom barrel. They exhanged it, no problem.

If I didn't live in NYC I would just purchase off of Amazon or locally. I do live in NY and only use them when I need something immediately or the company is paying for it. I don't see any reason to 'order' from J&R.

non-camera stuff (Amazon)
camera stuff (Amazon, B&H, Adorama, etc.)
