Hi guys

I was asked to take pictures for a kids basketball championship game. It is about 1 hr long for each division. I think there is about 3 or 4 divisions. I am not too sure and exactly about the number of the division yet.
Anyhow, they asked me to offer them a price.
So what's a reasonable price to offer them? I am very new to this thing, I would like to hear what is the current ongoing price. I am also trying to build up my profolio as well. So I probably won't charge as high as other professionals. But if any of you know the current market price that would be great.

Thanks!

Price depends on what they want. What exactly are they asking of, or from, you. It sounds like they want a price for the day, do they want prints or a cd? Do they just want you to show up and sell photos to the families?

It all depends on what they expect to get from you. Do they want a CD of images? High rez? What usage rights do they want (web use, printing rights, etc...)? Are you to provide prints? How many? Get some of that information and we will be able to help you more. Obviously you are going to be paid more if you have to provide prints vs. just showing up.

I think they would want me provide a CD of images. They might sell these prints to the family. I probably won't get involved with that.
So what's the price to provide a cd of images for like 3-4 hrs of work?

If it were me I would offer them a CD with LOW RES and prominently watermarked iomages for selection purposes only. Then charge by image.

Do not surrender control over your work to outsiders, even if you are starting out. It could come back and bite you.

Here's a pricing website: http://photographersindex.com/stockprice.htm (external link) - hope it is useful to you.

Here's what I charge (ALL material has my copyright on it unless by prior agreement where it is for advertising):

Digital

High Res 2mb + tiff or jpg
$24.95 sent by email within 5 working days - expect 1-2 days normally - suitable for high quality printing and enlarging
Low Res 100-200k
$9.95 sent by email within 5 working days - expect 1-2 days normally
Low Res - up to 3 files
$24.95 choose any 3 pics from one events
Low Res - up to 5 files
$34.95 choose any 5 pics from one events

Prints
8x6 inch
$13.95
12x8 inch
$19.95
18x12 inch
$39.95
30x20 inch
$79.95
add a border with event name
$4.95

*postage & packing from $2.50

Offer some digital images, suitably copyright marked, for the organisation's website for free as a sweetener, say 1 or 2 of each division.

Good luck!

If they are demanding a CD of images, i would go with $175/hr. But the CD of images has your small watermark/signature in each corner, and is suitable for printing up to 8x10. Larger has to be done though me. All of these details are in writing as well.

If they are getting a CD of images, then i charge hourly, or a flat fee for a set amount of time (ex: up to 3 hrs, etc..). But if you are having all print sales go though you, at least around here, you want get any pay to show up for the most part. Everything would be done "on spec", meaning you just kept the profits of any sales, and in some cases, you have to give a kickback to the league for them letting you be there. But just to let you know, NEVER give a CD as samples (or proofs), they will get ripped so fast. Look into setting up a website for this, it is not expensive at all.

ohh.. I do have a website on smugmug. I am still unsure that should I charge them hourly, and also charge them pic by pic if they request certain pics on a cd?
If they requests pics on the cd, Do you guys usually just put all the pics in the cd or make like something like web slideshow on the cd?
